Ecuador’s national telco, the Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT), will invest $437 million in improving the country’s telecom infrastructure this year.

Its main objectives are the expansion of the Internet network, the promotion of HSPA+ and LTE mobile networks and the DTH satellite service.

CNT aims to continue improving the fibre optic network and Wi-Fi access in the remote zones of the country. Since the former public companies Andanitel and Pacifictel were merged into CNT six years ago, the state has invested more than $1.2b in telecommunications.

Although Ecuador’s telecom market is open to other companies, some of the services are operated by CNT almost exclusively. Regarding land lines, CNT owns more than 85% of the market, while the private presence is represented by America Movil 4% and Grupo TV cable 2.2%.

When it comes to the Internet, CNT also leads the market with 54% of customers, followed by Grupo TV Cable 16% and America Movil 12%.
