Chile releases its first DTT HD channel
Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17-06-2013
Chile’s Cuartavision – the first HD signal broadcast solely through the country’s DTT system – started broadcasting at the weekend in the Coquimbo region.
Chile is continuing to improve its network in order to prepare for the analogue switch-off, which will take place later than initially expected due to some legal difficulties over the past few years.
Around 40% of Chileans have had access to DTT test broadcasts before now, but this is the first stable digital channel with HD content.
Thanks to a project by Chile’s telecoms regulator, Subtel, Cuartavision is now available for the nearly 110,000 set-top boxes which have already been purchased in the region. The Government estimates that around 80% of the population in the cities of La Serena and Coquimbo are covered by the signal.
The main goal of this new channel is to help local operators develop the competences needed for DTT as well as increase digital coverage in the central region.
Chile is still waiting for the definitive approval of the DTT law, which has been stuck with Parliament for nearly four years. Two weeks ago it was approved by the Senate and it’s expected to come into effect within the next few weeks.
