FOX Sports kicks off new football offering in the Netherlands

Joseph O’Halloran | 27-06-2013

It may lack the cachet of other leagues but the Eredivisie has given world football many of its legends, and FOX International Channels (FIC) is aiming to tap into this with the launch of FOX Sports in the Netherlands.

FIC has also announced that it will rebrand its existing Eredivisie Live channel to FOX Sports Eredivisie kicking off on 2 August with a match between Ajax Amsterdam and Roda JC Kerkrade.

FOX Sports is intended to be the Dutch destination for top international football including the Barclays Premier League, Serie A, the FA Cup, the League Cup, Coppa Italia, DFB Pokal and the UEFA Europa League. The new FOX Sports Eredivisie will comprise a three-channel multiplex offering live Dutch matches from the Eredivisie and Jupiler League, cup football from the KNVB and Dutch teams in the UEFA Europa League.

This latest move continues is another part of FOX’s strategy to increase its international reach which will have more than quadrupled from 17 million households in 2010 to nearly 70 million projected once the Italian and Dutch launches complete. Commenting on the Eredivisie development, Hernan Lopez, president and CEO of FIC said: “We’re very excited to bring FOX Sports to The Netherlands, a country full of passionate fans and rich in sporting tradition. I’m confident the FOX Sports Eredivisie and FOX Sports networks will become favoured sports destinations for the soccer-loving Dutch.”

Sundance to launch dedicated feed in Poland

Sundance to launch dedicated feed in Poland:
Sundance to launch dedicated feed in Poland

Editor | 24-06-2013

Aiming to support what the Robert Redford-founded channel calls “explosive growth across the market”, AMC/Sundance Channel Global is to launch a dedicated feed for the Polish market.

Previously available as part of Sundance Channel’s regional feed in Eastern Europe, the new tailored feed will be available on the Eutelsat Hot Bird 13C satellite starting 1 July as a 24/7 linear network in high definition, and will feature a selection of first run original drama and other programming along with independent films and documentaries.

The network is available on the three leading DTH platforms in the region as well as eight of the top ten cable systems, including Cyfrowy Polsat, NC+, Orange, UPC Poland, TOYA, Multimedia Polska and other operators. Once established, Sundance Channel Polska will subsequently cater specifically to local audiences via Polish language on-air promos, versioned programming and grassroots promotions. The transition to a fully dedicated feed will begin this year and reach completion in the early part of 2014.

“Poland continues to be one of the most important growth markets for Sundance Channel across

Europe,” commented Marco Frazier, VP global distribution, AMC/Sundance Channel Global. “We are excited to launch a tailored feed that will enable us to offer even more relevant programming and promotions locally. This development demonstrates our long-term commitment to providing high quality, independent-minded entertainment to audiences in Poland.”

Today’s news follows a spate of distribution deals for Sundance Channel across Europe and Asia over the past few months including network launches in Belgium, France and the Philippines. Earlier in June 2013, the AMC/Sundance Channel Global inked a distribution deal with DirecTV Latin America to launch Sundance Channel in the region.

Nilesat takes two TV stations off air over pirated content

Egypt’s Nilesat has taken off the air two satellite TV channels for allegedly broadcasting pirated content, as MBC Group, OSN and Rotana step up a campaign for better copyright enforcement in the region, Al Arabiya has reported. Egypt-based Panorama Comedy is no longer broadcasting via the Nilesat satellite, while a related channel Panorama Action also came off the air this weekend. “The channels were clearly illegitimately inspired. There was no attempt to get rights,” said the chief executive of MBC Group, Sam Barnett. “What happened a few weeks ago was that we finally made breakthroughs. Nilesat agreed that they would stop broadcasting Panorama: Panorama Comedy has already closed down as well as Panorama Action this past Saturday,” said Barnett.

DSAT Cinema network reaches one thousand sites in Europe

DSAT Cinema network reaches one thousand sites in Europe:
DSAT Cinema, the Eutelsat and dcinex joint-venture company specialising in satellite delivery of films and live events, announces that 1,000 cinema complexes in Europe, representing approximately 7,000 screens, are now fully equipped for satellite reception. This makes DSAT Cinema’s satellite network the most comprehensive in Europe.

With the steady expansion of digital cinema, the dematerialized transmission of films via satellite is a fast, secure solution for broadcasting content to an unlimited number of cinemas in a given coverage area. Using satellite technology, DSAT Cinema also broadcasts live events from locations that include New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre and the Royal Opera House in London.

DSAT Cinema is installing equipment in cinemas that comprises a dual-feed satellite antenna and a professional decoder from International Datacasting powered by SensioHiFi 3D technology.

Fabrice Testa, CEO of DSAT Cinema explains: “Using capacity on the EUTELSAT 5 West A satellite, DSAT Cinema is able to broadcast digital content to all fully-equipped cinemas in Europe irrespective of their location at uploads speeds of up to 70 Mbit/s. By combining this capacity with a second transponder on this satellite or on EUTELSAT 8 West A, it is possible to achieve aggregate throughput of up to 140 Mbit/s, enabling a 150 Gbyte digital film to be delivered in less than three hours.”

All decoders are controlled from the DSAT Cinema network operations centre to ensure fast and secure delivery of the content.

1,000 in Europe are now under contract and equipped with a full installation.

The company’s client portfolio includes major cinema chains like GaumontPathé, UGC, CGR, UCI, Kinepolis, The Space and many independent cinemas.

DSAT Cinema’s network of fully-equipped cinemas is mainly concentrated in Italy and France which each account for over 300 complexes, as well as Austria, Germany and Switzerland that together account for over 200 cinemas. A further 150 sites are located in Spain, Benelux, Czech Republic and Slovakia with the remaining installations principally in Poland, Romania and Scandinavia.

Marc Welinski, Chairman of DSAT Cinema, concluded: “We operate the most extensive cinema network connected to satellite in Europe. Our objective is to double the size of the network in the next two years to benefit from economies of scale that will allow us to offer our customers the most flexible and efficient service at the best conditions.”

Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, a co-founder of notorious file-sharing website The Pirate Bay, has been sentenced to two years in jail after hacking into Swedish government computers and making illegal online bank transfers.

The charges against the 28-year-old Warg included aggravated fraud, attempted aggravated fraud and data breaching. Warg was arrested in Sweden last year after being extradited from Cambodia to begin a one year jail sentence from 2009 for Internet piracy.

The two-year sentence was given to Warg for hacking into Swedish IT firm Logica (now CGI Sweden) and publishing the personal data of thousands of people, as well as hacking into Nordea (Scandinavia’s biggest bank) and successfully transferring 24,200 Danish crowns (£2,770), as well as attempting to transfer €683,000 (£583,000).

TVE tests Ultra HDTV through Hispasat

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 20-06-2013

A few months ago Hispasat announced that it would start testing Ultra HDTV broadcastings through its satellite network, and now this has taken shape in the form of a signal called TVE 4K which is being broadcast free-to-air via Hispasat 1E, according to Satcesc.com.

The race towards Ultra HDTV has already started in Spain and Hispasat is one of the competitors in an environment in which Eutelsat and SES Astra have already showed their intentions.

SES has been receiving the most attention in the past few weeks with a big event held last Wednesday with Canal+, Telefónica’s TSA, Newtec, Ovide, Promovisa, Sony and Trigital, in which the satellite company showed the first audiovisual content recorded in Spain for the 4K standard.

Hispasat has also been working with TSA in Latin America. In order to celebrate the launch of the Amazonas 3 satellite, both companies broadcast 4K content over the Atlantic Ocean.

Tomorrow, the Spanish satellite company is going to reveal an agreement with LG to develop 4K technology in the country. During the presentation Hispasat will broadcast some audiovisual content to one of the new LG Ultra HTDV screens, which is the biggest device among the current offer, at 84”.

Eutelsat 3D enters full commercial service at 3° East

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 20-06-2013

The Eutelsat 3D satellite went into full commercial service yesterday at 3° East with all traffic transferred overnight from Eutelsat 3C onto the new satellite.

With 33 operational transponders, additional capacity is now available from 3° East to address video, data, telecom and broadband markets in Europe as well as in Africa through a new service area.

Eutelsat 3D will operate at 3° East until the deployment of the Eutelsat 3B satellite to this position in the second quarter of 2014 to provide further spectrum growth and high levels of operational flexibility in C, Ku and Ka bands.

“The entry into service of Eutelsat 3D enables Eutelsat to initiate enhancements to its fleet that will bring higher in-orbit security and increased capacity,” the group comments.

Eutelsat 3C will be deployed in early July from 3° East to the Hot Bird position at 13° East and renamed Hot Bird 13D. It will be co-located with the identical Hot Bird 13B and C satellites.

The reconfiguration of the Hot Bird constellation will release the Hot Bird 13A satellite which will be deployed to 7/8° West.

Renamed Eutelsat 8 West C, it will enable Eutelsat to switch on additional transponders at the key neighbourhood for satellite television in North Africa and the Middle East.

The 7/8° West arc, already hosting Eutelsat and Nilesat satellites, broadcasts over 1,000 channels to more than 30 million homes.

This orbital position will get a further boost in the second half of 2015 with the launch of Eutelsat 8 West B.

Portugal: Football League opposes Sport TV structure

Portugal: Football League opposes Sport TV structure:
Portugal: Football League opposes Sport TV structure

From Branislav Pekic in Rome

The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) is considering filing a complaint to the European Union against the joint control of Sport TV by Portugal Telecom and Zon Multimedia.

The move was announced by LPFP president, Mário Figueiredo, during a Parliamentary hearing with the members of the Committee for Ethics, Citizenship and Communication. During the meeting, he presented the concern of the League clubs in relation to the new shareholding structure of Sport TV, cliaming it will harm competition in the sports TV rights market, as Portugal Telecom and Zon have 90 per cent of the pay-TV market.

Sport TV is a pay-TV company that operates six sports-oriented TV channels in Portugal.

The new shareholding structure, which was notified to the Portugal’s Competition Authority on March 14th, will see Sportinveste owning 50 per cent of Sport TV, while Portugal Telecom and Zon will each have 25 per cent. Previously, Zon and Sportinveste each had 50 per cent.

Fox focuses on Italy with sports play

Joseph O’Halloran | 19-06-2013

Just as it is getting used to its new corporate identity as 21st century Fox, the former News Corp is looking to tap into sports-mad Italy with a new pay-TV offering from FOX International Channels (FIC).

The international pay-TV unit is set to launch in August 2013 offering FOX Sports content for which its European interests are providing huge revenue streams. Specifically it will broadcast football from the English Premier League, La Liga from Spain, French Ligue Un and the English FA Cup alongside a slate of signature news and sports talk shows.

“Our goal is to bring all the passion of FOX Sports to the most passionate sports fans around the world,” explained Hernan Lopez, president and CEO of FIC. “And in this ranking, Italy comes high up on the list.”

FIC has embarked upon a strategy of expanding into sports, and this plan has seen over the past two years launches of FOX Sports in Brazil and Japan, the acquisition of a majority stake in Eredivisie Live in the Netherlands and the conversion of Star-ESPN to FOX Sports throughout South East Asia. In 2010 FOX Sports had 17 million households outside of the United States and this now stands at over 64 million subscribers.

Pay-TV rev growth stalls but satellite gets into higher orbit than cable

Pay-TV rev growth stalls but satellite gets into higher orbit than cable:
Pay-TV rev growth stalls but satellite gets into higher orbit than cable

Editor | 19-06-2013

Combined DTH and DBS revenues will see satellite soar past cable, according to a new 97-country survey by Digital TV Research.

Overall, the Digital TV World Revenue Forecasts report casts the gloomy conclusion that fast growth years for pay-TV are over, with annual growth in 2013 being round the 3% mark, falling to 2% by 2015. That said, it also predicts a lot of strong business to be done in this period with global pay-TV revenues, including subscription fees and on-demand movies and TV episodes, set to reach $203 billion in 2018, up by $19 billion on 2012.

Total pay-TV revenues are likely to fall in 14 countries by the end of 2013, with revenues declining for 15 countries between 2012 and 2018. The bulk of the fast-growing nations will likely be in Africa, but the US will remain the world’s largest pay-TV revenue earner but with revenues declining by $5.1 billion between 2012 and 2018 as homes convert to bundles and as competition forces down prices.

The analyst predicts that satellite TV will account for 45.9% of total revenues by the end of 2013, rising to 47.6% by 2018. DTH revenues are expected to reach $97 billion in 2018, up from $83 billion in 2012, with the US remaining market leader, though its share of the total will fall from 43.5% in 2012 to 38.7% in 2018. Brazil is set to add the most DTH revenues ($3.5 billion) between 2012 and 2018. Fellow BRIC India is also expected to show strong growth, with its DTH revenues climbing by 135%, $2.2 billion in the same period.

Despite huge activity in the European sector, not least through the aggressive acquisition spree by Liberty Global, cable’s share is set to drop from 45.9% in 2013 to 40.7%. The data showed that global cable TV revenues peaked in 2012 at $86.9 billion, and will fall to $82.6 billion in 2018. Even though it calculates cable TV revenues will drop by $8.3 billion in the 2012-2018 period, the analyst believes that operators can gain extra revenues by converting subscribers to bundles.

In the same time frame, Digital TV Research believes that IPTV will emerge as the fastest growing platform with revenues climbing from 7.5% in 2013 to 10.5% by 2018.

Qatar to connect fibre to all homes by end 2014

Qatar to connect fibre to all homes by end 2014:
Qatar to connect fibre to all homes by end 2014

Rebecca Hawkes | 19-06-2013

All homes in Qatar are going to be hooked up to the nation’s fibre optic network by the end of 2014 and be able to benefit from ultra-fast, data-rich broadband services such as high definition television, according to Ooredoo - Qatar’s state telecommunications operator formerly known as Qtel.

“In January 2012 we commercially launched Ooredoo Fibre, which is Qatar’s fastest ever home fibre optic network. We firmly believe in the benefits of fibre optic networks for our customers and we have committed to spend capital of more than QR1 billion to have Ooredoo Fibre pass by all households in Qatar by the end of 2014,” said Waleed Al Sayed, chief operating officer at Ooredoo.

“Currently we have passed 191,000 homes and connected 56,000 homes, and we are continuing to pass thousands of more homes every month,” Al Sayed added.

The next stage in its roll-out is to launch Ooredoo Business Fibre, with particular emphasis on small and medium sized business in Qatar.

International management consultants Arthur D Little (ADL) says the tiny Gulf state has one of the fastest nationwide fibre roll-outs in the world since the start of deployment in 2011, according to the average percentage of homes passed by fibre [33% of the total] and the number of homes connected [6.3%] per year. The firm’s report, National Fibre Strategies: National economic imperative or just another private industry task? is based on figures from the Fibre To The Home (FTTH) Council as well as data collected from operators and other estimates by ADL.

DreamWorks deal is Netflix' largest original content deal to date

DreamWorks deal is Netflix' largest original content deal to date:
DreamWorks deal is Netflix’ largest original content deal to date

Michelle Clancy | 18-06-2013

Netflix has inked its largest deal for original first-run content in its history with an agreement with DreamWorks Animation.

DreamWorks will produce original series from the award-winning creators of global box office hits including the Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon franchises. It marks the first time DreamWorks’ characters will be introduced into the television market as a branded collection of shows.

The deal will encompass more than 300 hours of new programming, and is a cornerstone of a major initiative by DreamWorks Animation to greatly expand its television production and distribution worldwide. The new shows will be inspired by characters from DreamWorks Animation’s hit franchises and upcoming feature films, as well as the vast Classic Media library, which DreamWorks acquired in 2012 and includes some of the most popular animated characters in history.

With the first series expected to begin airing in 2014, Netflix will premiere these new DreamWorks Animation shows in all the territories in which it operates.

“DreamWorks Animation is a valued partner in our global efforts to provide families with the most engaging stories delivered however, whenever and wherever they want,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “This deal represents a major expansion of what’s already a phenomenal relationship, allowing us to bring beloved DreamWorks characters to the 40 countries where Netflix operates and setting the stage for us to innovate together as we expand into new markets.”

“This is an unprecedented commitment to original content in the Internet television space,” said DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. “Netflix is a visionary company that continues to redefine the way audiences watch television and it is a thrill to add to their growing momentum.”

In February, Netflix and DreamWorks announced their first ever Netflix Original Series for kids based on the highly-anticipated film Turbo, premiering on 17 July. Turbo F.A.S.T, an episodic animated programme, which picks up with the speedy snail where the feature film left off, will be available in all Netflix territories beginning in December.

In addition to character-based selections, the service displays rows of TV shows and movies organised by easy-to-understand genres such as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power.

Eutelsat Satellite Finder launched to support drive for highest signal quality

Eutelsat Satellite Finder launched to support drive for highest signal quality:
Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) has launched Eutelsat Satellite Finder a unique easy-to-use tool for accurate pointing of satellite antennas for consumers, installers, VSAT operators as well as news agencies, broadcasters and service operators carrying out newsgathering operations. The new application - available on iOS and Android driven devices – is available for all Eutelsat satellites. It underscores Eutelsat’s drive for the highest signal quality and improved data throughput for satellite users, following on from its pioneering support and adoption of the Carrier ID initiative to enable the identification of satellite transmissions.

Eutelsat Satellite Finder assembles a full set of basic parameters for exact antenna pointing, from elevation and azimuth angles to line of sight and optimal polarization angles. For smartphones and tablets not equipped with a GPS module, locations can be determined via Google Maps for automatic identification of longitude and latitude needed for precise calculations of azimuth and elevation angles. Using augmented reality, the app shows a given location with a general pointing direction while the tilt sensors of smartphones and tablets guide users towards the exact alignment. In order to help visualise the line of sight, the app also uses the built-in camera of a device to display a satellite.

With Eutelsat Satellite Finder, Eutelsat is extending across its entire fleet the ‘KA-SAT Finder’ application launched in 2012 to support accurate installations of Tooway antennas and ‘Fransat Assistance’ for users in France receiving the platform of French digital channels broadcast by EUTELSAT 5 West A.

The app is available free of charge at iTunes and Google Play, tagged as Eutelsat Satellite Finder.

Reidel extends intercom for Al Jazeera and Manhattan Center Studios

Reidel extends intercom for Al Jazeera and Manhattan Center Studios:
Reidel extends intercom for Al Jazeera and Manhattan Center Studios

Michelle Clancy | 17-06-2013

Riedel Communications has announced that Manhattan Center Studios is extending its Riedel intercom system to tie together all of its studios and performance halls, as well as a new client news network, Al Jazeera America, that will be completed this summer.

Manhattan Center Studios is one of the largest Riedel intercom integrations in the Americas.

“We believe that the Riedel intercom is on another level from its competition, and with every software release, it becomes both more powerful and easier to programme,” said Marvin Williams, director of engineering and operations at Manhattan Center Studios. “There is no request a production or client can make that we cannot accommodate. Now that we are completely Riedel — Artist matrix and keypanels, Performer digital party lines, and Acrobat wireless — the whole system is a pleasure to use. Investing in Riedel is one of the best decisions we ever made.”

The Manhattan Center is known for hosting performances and special events in which media and entertainment come together. With its unique location in the heart of midtown Manhattan, the facility is a mid-size venue for corporate galas, charity fundraisers, award shows, rock concerts and fashion shows. The Manhattan Center is home to the Hammerstein Ballroom, originally created as an opera house, as well as a full ballroom, two full TV studios, the Log Cabin and Studio seven audio studios, and 20-plus edit suites, all of which are connected with Riedel intercom systems.

The new installation includes 64-port and 32-port Artist digital matrix intercom mainframes, both equipped with redundant power supplies and CPU cards and featuring fibre connectivity. MADI Client cards allow the transparent transport of up to 64 MADI signals through the Artist infrastructure. For accessing the intercom matrix, a combination of new OLED rack-mount (RCP-1112) and desktop (DCP-1116) key panels have been distributed across the facility. In addition, its Acrobat wireless system was expanded with a new CC-60 system controller, ten new beltpacks, and additional antennas to enhance coverage. The Manhattan Center Studios also added two commentary control panels (CCP-1116) that can each support two commentators, for use during live events or voiceovers.

“Manhattan Center Studios was one of our first US customers, and today it continues to be one of our greatest partners,” said Patti Gunnell, entertainment solutions manager for North America at Riedel Communications. “Customers like Manhattan Center Studios, who demand products that are both flexible and reliable, have made our Artist product the best digital matrix intercom platform available today.”

Tennis Australia and Seven have extended their long-term broadcasting partnership for a further five years.

Yahoo! and Millward Brown to measure online advertising across Asia

Yahoo! and Millward Brown to measure online advertising across Asia:
Yahoo! and Millward Brown to measure online advertising across Asia

Louise Duffy | 17-06-2013

Yahoo! Asia Pacific and advertising specialist Millward Brown have announced a partnership to evaluate the brand impact of digital advertising.

The aim is to provide advertisers with a comprehensive view of online marketing effectiveness in general and on Yahoo! properties, using Millward Brown’s AdIndex solution.

“Yahoo! is taking a bold step by highlighting branding impact of digital advertising. Too often, advertisers rely solely on click-stream metrics to judge campaign success. We have studied over 7,000 digital campaigns globally and 300 in AMAP, and we have seen a huge difference across campaigns in their ability to shape consumer perceptions of the brand,” said Sonia Liang, Millward Brown media and digital director for Hong Kong and Taiwan.

“The consumer decision-making journey is becoming more complex. So while some advertisers might be looking purely for the click-through data, the smart ones know that meaningfully different brand perceptions set up by a digital campaign can influence purchase later, even offline.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Millward Brown to bring deeper insights for our advertisers,” said Francis Che, Yahoo! head of insights in APAC. “As the world’s largest digital publisher, Yahoo!’s mission is to create user experiences that inspire and entertain. When we immerse brands into those experiences in a highly personalised and relevant way, advertisers see results. Our partnership will play an important role to provide clients with a means for better understanding consumers’ attitudes and, as a result, improve their ROI.”

Starz green-lights 50 Cent-produced Power

Starz green-lights 50 Cent-produced Power:
Starz green-lights 50 Cent-produced Power

Michelle Clancy | 17-06-2013

STARZ has given the green-light to Power, an hour-long original drama series executive-produced by Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson.

Power tells the story of James ‘Ghost’ St Patrick, a wealthy New York City nightclub owner who caters to the city’s elite. He wants to build an empire and turn the club into a Fortune 500 business, but Ghost is living a double life. When he is not in the club, he is the kingpin of the most lucrative drug network in New York for a very high-level clientele. His marriage, family and business all become unknowingly threatened as he is tempted to leave his criminal life behind and become the rags-to-riches businessman he wants to be most of all.

“STARZ has given our team an opportunity to explore a world of beauty, luxury, danger and death, all against the struggle of one man to define his nature and his soul,” said executive producer and show-runner Courtney Kemp Agboh. “While the power and peril of Ghost’s world are specific, we hope to address the truly universal questions we all face when we look in the mirror: who am I? Where am I going? Who do I want to become?”

“We are thrilled to add Power to our growing original programming line-up for 2014,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht. “Curtis has a unique and specific vision for the series, lending it an authenticity and voice rarely seen. Courtney has created a rich world and characters not often explored in contemporary drama. There is a rawness and soul to the character of Ghost as he struggles to live between these two worlds that we believe will leave an indelible mark on the audience and stay with them after the credits roll.”

The first season will be eight hour-long episodes and will begin filming in late 2013. STARZ retains all global distribution and home entertainment rights to the series.

Comcast launches X2 personalised TV platform

Comcast launches X2 personalised TV platform:
Comcast launches X2 personalised TV platform

Michelle Clancy | 17-06-2013

Comcast has launched the next version of the cloud-enabled Xfinity X1 Platform, X2, which will begin rolling out later this year.

The upgrade is made to be a customised TV product that integrates “live and on-demand TV, Web content, home control and a growing number of apps in one user interface, which consumers can access on a TV, smartphone, tablet or PC,” according to the company.

A new feature called Send to TV enables customers “to easily fling a Web page, like one that features streaming video, directly to an X1 set-top box and view it on the big screen.” After downloading a bookmarklet onto their computer, tablet or smartphone, a customer chooses the Web content they would like to see on their TV, clicks Send to TV in their bookmarks bar, and the content from their computer or device then appears on the television.

Comcast also said that customers will be able to access TV-optimised sites from a variety of third-party partners in an expanding app marketplace.

“The X1 Platform is an incredible example of what’s possible with cloud innovation,” said Brian Roberts, chairman and CEO at Comcast, in introducing X2. “With the introduction of Web-based content to the platform today, and the promise of a faster and more integrated experience with X2, we’re adding more functionality to each screen in a customer’s home, and transforming our video product into a complete entertainment operating system.”

X2 includes a personalised home screen accessible across the TV and across mobile devices that will offer a single view into the information the viewer cares about. The display will feature a collection of tiles that a customer can customise as they see fit, including integrating most-used apps on one screen. It can also be customised to include recently recorded DVR content or info from a favourite app, such as traffic alerts, weather forecasts or news headlines. Other Xfinity services can be incorporated as well, such as calendar appointments, voicemails from Xfinity Voice, as well as home thermostat and security status from Xfinity Home.

The platform also will recommend content that is playing on live TV based on the customer’s past viewing habits, and includes a new six-guide carousel that filters TV listings by specific category, such as sports, kids programming and movies, and also filters by age to help ensure appropriate family viewing.

Customers can manage content from any screen so preferences, subscriptions, saved programs and parental controls stay consistent across the Comcast TV Everywhere universe.

X2 also incorporates new features like viewer ratings from interactive services Rotten Tomatoes and Zeebox, and ratings from Common Sense Media for age-appropriate content. Through the dashboard, consumers can use tiles to track their social feeds or photos on Facebook and Twitter, and others.

Cartoon Network leaves Spanish pay-TV

Cartoon Network leaves Spanish pay-TV:
Cartoon Network leaves Spanish pay-TV

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17-06-2013

Turner Broadcasting System is removing Cartoon Network and Cartoonito – the preschool version – from Spanish pay-TV platforms.

From 1 July both channels will leave Canal+, Ono, Movistar TV and R, and the company doesn’t plan to replace them with other offers.

From next month, Turner will only offer the movie channels TCM and TCM Autor, the entertainment channel TNT and CNN International in Spain. The DTT channel Boing, which the company owns with Mediaset, will still broadcast some Turner content free-to-air.

Cartoon Network was one of the pioneers of themed TV in Spain when it was intially broadcast in 1995 by the first cable operators. It is also one of the most long-standing pay-TV offers, having been available through the Digital+ offer (formerly Canal Satélite Digital) since 1997.

Turner also tried to offer adult animation content by releasing Boomerang, but after finding that the children’s programming was more profitable, it decided to replace this with Cartoonito for preschool viewers.

Cartoonito and Cartoon Network are currently available on most Spanish pay-TV platforms, with the latter’s schedule available one hour later on ONO through Cartoon Network+1.

Liberty Global announces stock repurchase programme

Michelle Clancy | 17-06-2013

Liberty Global has unveiled a $3.5 billion stock repurchase programme, looking to reward shareholders following its multibillion-dollar purchase of Virgin Media Inc. The initiative replaces a previous $1 billion buy-back programme, which was announced in December.

Liberty said it intends to complete the new repurchase programme over the next two years.

Liberty Global, led by media mogul John Malone, has forged ahead lately on an aggressive global expansion plan, with a focus on Europe. Earlier this month, Liberty Global completed its purchase of UK cable giant provider Virgin Media for $16 billion. This is part of a buying spree that includes the recent purchase of a 12.7% stake in Dutch cable operator Ziggo NV (ZIGGO.AE) for $808.3 million. It’s also rumoured that Liberty Global is interested in German cable operator Kabel Deutschland, which is also in talks with Vodafone about a potential $13.3 billion takeover to allow Vodafone to compete more effectively with incumbent Deutsche Telekom.

Chile releases its first DTT HD channel

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17-06-2013

Chile’s Cuartavision – the first HD signal broadcast solely through the country’s DTT system – started broadcasting at the weekend in the Coquimbo region.

Chile is continuing to improve its network in order to prepare for the analogue switch-off, which will take place later than initially expected due to some legal difficulties over the past few years.

Around 40% of Chileans have had access to DTT test broadcasts before now, but this is the first stable digital channel with HD content.

Thanks to a project by Chile’s telecoms regulator, Subtel, Cuartavision is now available for the nearly 110,000 set-top boxes which have already been purchased in the region. The Government estimates that around 80% of the population in the cities of La Serena and Coquimbo are covered by the signal.

The main goal of this new channel is to help local operators develop the competences needed for DTT as well as increase digital coverage in the central region.

Chile is still waiting for the definitive approval of the DTT law, which has been stuck with Parliament for nearly four years. Two weeks ago it was approved by the Senate and it’s expected to come into effect within the next few weeks.

Four leading companies in the HbbTV space – Digital TV Labs, Dolby, httv and Optiva Media - are to use Broadcast Asia 2013 to highlight what they regard as the benefits of the hybrid connected TV standard.

HbbTV enables platform operators to leverage their existing broadcast output with a large range of connected TV services on multiple devices, avoiding, say its proponents, the pitfalls and costs of proprietary systems. End-users are also said to be able to consume a wide range of content via a unified interface, including individual broadcaster services, traditional broadcast TV, on-demand and catch-up TV.

Digital TV Labs, Dolby, httv and Optiva Media will lead discussions on themes such as: best practices, current deployments, industry specifications, interoperability and the future of HbbTV.

The seminars have been designed to educate visitors about innovation and developments in the HbbTV standard and connected TV, as well as its prospects of expansion in the region. It will offer the opportunity to meet the specialists responsible for HbbTV deployment and its continued growth across the world.

NBCUniversal launches UK subscription VOD

NBCUniversal launches UK subscription VOD

Joseph O’Halloran | 15-06-2013

In a relaunch of PictureBox Films, NBCUniversal is offering its bespoke feature film subscription video on demand (VOD) service direct to consumers in the UK and Ireland.

After what NBC calls a “radical” redesign and major rebrand of the VOD portal, NBC will be offering access to 60 hand-picked films from a desktop computer, Samsung Smart TV or mobile devices such as iPads, iPhones and Android phones.

PictureBox, was launched in 2006 as a digital TV SVOD service, is also available in the UK through third parties Virgin Media, TalkTalk, BT Vision and Top Up TV; and in Poland, Russia, Latin America, Brazil and Singapore via local platform providers. NBC says that the new PictureBox will differentiate from its large number of online video rivals, not least LOVEFiLM and Netflix, with what it calls a “unique, enjoyable” viewing experience through a “carefully curated” subscription VOD service. Moreover it stresses that its bouquet will enable film fans to spend more time actually watching movies and less time choosing them. Available immediately, titles will be added onto the site each week and initial content will include The Eagle, The American, Bridget Jones’ Diary, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Jarhead and The Bourne Identity.

Broadcast Asia 2013: Measat, Ericsson trial UltraHD satellite TV

Joseph O’Halloran | 15-06-2013

As 3DTV begins what looks like a death spiral and 4KTV the latest hot ticket, MEASAT Satellite Systems has begun trials with Ericsson to demonstrate live UltraHD services.

Under the terms of the partnership, the two companies say that they will investigate the challenge of enabling necessary workflows through the entire broadcasting ecosystem to the home by demonstrating the ability to provide live UltraHD video contribution over MEASAT’s satellite network.

MEASAT has a reach that covers over 150 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Australia, representing 80% of the world’s population. The solution that it has in place for the UltraHD trial will use Ericsson’s AVP 2000 contribution encoders and RX8200 advanced modular receivers. At Broadcast Asia 2013 the companies say they will demonstrate an encoding system they say will show efficient delivery of the next-generation video that is increasingly being demanded.

“MEASAT looks forward to supporting UltraHD TV across Asia, beginning with this trial on our high-powered MEASAT-3 satellite. UltraHD TV will take consumer expectations for high quality picture to a new level. We are therefore ensuring that the necessary solutions and systems are in place to deliver the next generation of TV services that meet evolving consumer demand,” commented Jarod Lopez, Vice President, Broadcast Sales, MEASAT.

“We understand that with consumer demand for higher quality comes greater pressure on broadcasters to increase service velocity while maintaining the high standards that are expected,” added Dr. Giles Wilson, Head of TV Compression Business, Ericsson. “This trial with MEASAT demonstrates how content providers and broadcasters can simply and effectively build their UHDTV content libraries so that they are ready for commercial launch in the coming years.

Gracenote aims for second-screen with new video API program

Joseph O’Halloran | 16-06-2013

Video metadata and recognition technologies provider Gracenote is aiming to capture a foothold in the second screen arena with new video APIs.

Designed to herald a push from music to video for the company, the API release includes TV listings data and imagery, as well as automatic content recognition (ACR) technology, which lets smartphones and tablets identify and sync with TV programmes and films.

Gracenote recognition technology and data currently see use in the second screen experience for a number of leading TV companion apps, including Syfy Sync and zeebox. Gracenote TV listings and descriptive metadata have also been adopted in Smart TV and second screen guide experiences from major TV manufacturers.

With its new services, the company now feels confident that developers have the opportunity “to dive deep into this technology and data, and try to create the future of TV.”

“The music arm of entertainment has seen tremendous innovation from developers and has been embraced by major industry players, but TV has been left relatively untouched by the independent developer community,” explained Eric Allen, vice president of services at Gracenote. “Gracenote’s vast source of TV and movie metadata and video recognition technology has the potential to rally developers around re-inventing the TV experience.”

Gracenote will debut its Video APIs at the TVOT Hackathon in San Francisco on June 22 and will offer a $2,000 prize for the most innovative hack built using them. Developers can get access the Video APIs early by registering for the Gracenote Developer Program at: https://developer.gracenote.com/

Samsung smart TV hub adds ITV Player to complete catch-up services

Joseph O’Halloran | 16-06-2013

Samsung has made a full sweep of leading UK broadcasters’ catch-up services with the addition of the ITV Player to Smart TV platform.

ITV’s catch-up service will complement the BBC iPlayer, Channel 5’s Demand 5 and the 4oD service form Channel 4 to its connected TV hub which it feels is best placed to tap into a market where according to its Future of Smart TV research form May 2013 a tenth of UK viewing is via catch-up.

In addition to the catch-up bouquet, Samsung is also working with app partners such as the BBC to develop programming specifically for their on-demand services. It also offers its R Recommendation which is designed to learn intelligently viewing preferences, respond to voice and instantly search live TV, video on-demand services and apps to recommend content tailored to viewer tastes.

“People now spend an average of 2.7 hours a day watching TV. We know that more and more people are using catch up services, so demand for our full catch up offering will be high,” commented Guy Kinnell, Head of TV and AV at Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland. “We’ve also seen content providers such as the BBC meeting this trend by commissioning original dramas for BBC iPlayer while the ‘House of Cards’ has been streamed exclusively for Netflix subscribers.”

Ecuador to invest $437m in telecom infrastructure

Ecuador to invest $437m in telecom infrastructure

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 16-06-2013

Ecuador’s national telco, the Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT), will invest $437 million in improving the country’s telecom infrastructure this year.

Its main objectives are the expansion of the Internet network, the promotion of HSPA+ and LTE mobile networks and the DTH satellite service.

CNT aims to continue improving the fibre optic network and Wi-Fi access in the remote zones of the country. Since the former public companies Andanitel and Pacifictel were merged into CNT six years ago, the state has invested more than $1.2b in telecommunications.

Although Ecuador’s telecom market is open to other companies, some of the services are operated by CNT almost exclusively. Regarding land lines, CNT owns more than 85% of the market, while the private presence is represented by America Movil 4% and Grupo TV cable 2.2%.

When it comes to the Internet, CNT also leads the market with 54% of customers, followed by Grupo TV Cable 16% and America Movil 12%.

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 16-06-2013

Telefónica’s Media Networks has finished its migration to the new Hispasat satellite, Amazonas 3, after proving that it’s comercially operative.

With the migration of more than 2 million mobile customers in Brazil, the Latin American satellite network of Telefónica is now only working through the new satellite.

The new platform will provide more space for HD signals and multimedia services. The DTH platform and the HD and SD signals were also migrated from Amazonas 1 during last weeks.

The Ka banda slot, which Telefónica bought in order to offer a satellite Internet service, is also working in Amazonas 3. The service will be probably launch in the region in the secon half of the year, once the telecom centres the company is building in Chile and the US are finished.

The Amazonas 3 is the 10th satellite launched by Hispasat. It has 52 simultaneous transponders, 19 in C band and 9 ‘spot beams’ in Ka band. Its expected lifespan is 15 years. To celebrate the satellite’s launch, Telefonica used it to make the first Ultra HDTV 4K broadcast in Latin America.

Venezuela's opposition candidate starts online TV programme

Venezuela’s opposition candidate starts online TV programme

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 16-06-2013

Henrique Capriles, Venezuela’s opposition leader, has started a new programme on his own Internet TV channel, capriles.tv.

According to him, Venezuelan media are not taking him into consideration any more, which is why he launched the show.

All Of Us Are Venezuela is broadcast every Tuesday. During the first programme, Capriles answered the questions of a group of Venezuelan and international journalists.

Since the last elections and Capriles’ refusal to accept the results, Venezuela’s government decided to ban him from most of the country’s media. Moreover, the only channel out of the official influence, Globovision, underwent some changes which brought it under the Government’s control, and the newspaper Cadena Capriles was sold to “a well-known Venezuelan group”, according to its own official release.

Capriles’ programme and the intention of creating an Internet TV channel by the former Globovision’s workers are the most recent movements in a media market which is struggling under pressure from the state.

Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 14-06-2013

DIRECTV Sports plans to broadcast every game of the ninth edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 live and in HD.

The tournament, to be held in Brazil from 15-30 June, will serve as a preview of not just the region’s FiFA World Cup athletes, but also the country’s new stadiums that have been built or remodelled especially for the World Cup, including Mane Garrincha in Brasilia and the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

DIRECTV will offer special editions of Total Football and Sports Central, live coverage, and pre- and post-match commentary.

There are eight Confederations Cup participants, representing every continent. Brazil is participating as the host country, with Spain included for being the world champion. Uruguay, Mexico, Japan, Nigeria and Tahiti will participate as winners of their respective continental competitions, and Italy will represent Europe as the continental runner-up (first place was Spain).

Brazil, with the help of coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, seek to win their fourth victory in the cup and look to defend the title they won four years ago in South Africa. Uruguay will try to capture the momentum that spurred it to win the America’s Cup and reach the World Cup semi-finals. For its part, Spain wants to extend its European and world-level success to a tournament that it has never managed to win.

All games will be broadcast by DIRECTV Sports (Channel 610) and DIRECTV Sports HD (channel 611), in Argentina, the Caribbean, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
