América Móvil prepares Claro Sports to focus on the Olympics
Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 29-11-2013
América Móvil has announced it will modify Dish’s Viva Sports to create Claro Sports, a single channel brand to be broadcast to the whole of Latin America, focusing on Russia’s winter Olympic Games in 2014 and Brazil’s summer Olympics in 2016.
According to the Mexican newspaper El Universal, the telco made the announcement during the winter games coverage presentation. Carlos Slim’s company has almost exclusive rights of the sports event and has agreed with 28 Latin American media companies to broadcast it.
Claro Sports (which will air around 15 December), the online UnoTV channel and 26 local channels will target a potential audience of over 90 million in the whole region, excluding Brazil. Most of the platforms which signed a deal with América Móvil are public media and come from 17 different countries.
The winter games deal precedes the telco’s broadcasting of Brazil’s Olympics in 2016, for which América Móvil also possesses the rights for Latin America.
