Sport1 secures rights to Olympic ice hockey
Jörn Krieger | 19-12-2013
German commercial broadcaster Sport1 will screen the ice hockey tournaments of the Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi live on free-to-air TV and on the Internet.
The sports channel has secured the rights through a sub-licencing agreement with SportA, the sports rights agency of German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF which hold the German broadcast rights for the Olympics.
In total, Sport1 will show around 25 games live on free-TV and as a live stream on Sport1.de including the semi-finals and finals. On Sport1 HD, the matches will be aired in high definition.
“For the first time we will screen an Olympic competition live on our platforms,” Sport1’s managing director, Olaf Schröder said. “The Winter Games are the highlight of the 2014 sporting year along with the Football World Cup.”
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will take place from 7-23 February in Sochi, Russia. The men’s ice hockey tournament will kick off on 12 February and end on the last day of the Olympics while the women’s tournament will take place between 8-20 February.
