Al Jazeera journalists arrested by Egyptian Government
Editor | 30-12-2013
Al Jazeera is demanding the immediate release of four of its journalists who have been arrested by Egyptian security forces.
Correspondent Peter Greste a veteran journalist who previously worked for Reuters, CNN and the BBC as well as producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed and cameraman Mohamed Fawzy were seized following what Eqypts interior ministry called “illegal meetings” with the Muslim Brotherhood, recently declared by Cairo as a terrorist organisation.
The arrests come on the heels of clashes between police and Muslim Brotherhood supporters across Egypt. A statement by Egypts interior ministry statement accused the Qatar-based news organisation of broadcasting “false news” that was “damaging to national security”.
The arrests are the latest in a series of clashes between the broadcaster and the Egyptian Government. In September, Al Jazeera Media Network called in lawyers to take action over what it said was a campaign by the Egyptian Government against its journalists working in the country. In the weeks immediately following the overthrow of the Morsi Government by the Egyptian military, a large number of journalists working for Al Jazeera were arrested and detained by the security services on what the news organisation condemned as spurious and politically motivated charges.
