Kabel BW to add HD channels

Kabel BW to add HD channels

Jörn Krieger | 31-05-2013

German cable operator Kabel BW will add three new HD channels to its cable network serving federal state Baden-Württemberg: auto motor sport HD, Spiegel TV Wissen HD and Lust Pur HD.

At the same time, the data rate of the fastest Internet access service will be increased to more than 100Mbps.

To create the capacity for the expansion, Kabel BW will reshuffle the transmission frequencies on its cable network in June 2013. If the channels aren’t automatically found on their new slots, customers have to do a channel search on their digital reception device.

Further information on the changes, the timetable and the revised channel line-up can be found on http://www.kabelbw.de/info. The affected households will also receive information by letter.

Rebecca Hawkes | 31-05-2013

Zuku has added 11 new channels to its pay-TV platform in East Africa, adding short films, Bollywood blockbusters, Swahili movies, Indian food and international news channels to its roster.

Having taken capacity on the SES 5 satellite, Zuku has now added Shorts TV, which has not been aired before in Africa, along with popular Hindi movie channel UTV Movies to its satellite bouquet.

The Wananchi Group-owned operator is also introducing its own-branded offerings of Zuku Swahili Movies, which will air a range of East African films subtitled in English, and Zuku Movies Max HD – a high definition version of its existing channel. The Kenya-based operator has also launched a one-hour time-shift version of Zuku Movies Max.

Indian food channel Zee Khana Kazana from Zee TV is also new to Zuku, while African music channel One Music - previously only available on Zuku’s cable platform - has been added to the satellite bouquet.

Sports content has also increased with the addition of Setanta Action, which focuses primarily on combat and action sports, and Zuku Sport HD, an HD version of the Zuku Sports channel that includes programming from Manchester United’s MUTV and Arsenal TV, as well as motorsport, athletics, basketball, boxing and mixed martial arts.

CCTV News from China Central Television and DW News from German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle have been added by Zuku, along with Chinese documentary channel CCTV9 and general interest channel CCTV4. The latter is in Mandarin, with some programming subtitled in English.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the new portfolio of channels we are able to offer Zuku’s audiences. The spectrum of content acquired through these new carriage deals further reinforces our mandate to provide the market with excellent range, relevance and value for their money,” said Hannelie Bekker, managing director of Wananchi Programming.

Zuku is currently available in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Having invested in a transponder on SES 5 and switched from NSS 12, the pay-TV operator is now able to reach a larger audience in sub-Saharan Africa, and has expansion plans throughout East Africa.

First Ultra HDTV 4K broadcast in Latin America

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 31-05-2013

Media Networks and Telefonica Audiovisual Solutions (TSA) have carried out the first Ultra HDTV 4K broadcast in Latin America.

Through the Hispasat satellite, the image was generated by Telefónica in Madrid and shown in Rio de Janeiro in order to celebrate that the Ka band is now working in Latin America thanks to the new Amazonas satellite.

This is only the first step for the region, as there is no Ultra HDTV 4K programming as yet. “The first one will enter pay-TV in the Q2 of next year,” said Loles del Campillo, TV productions director of Media Networks, at the event.

However, this isn’t the first time Telefonica has made an Ultra HDTV broadcast. TSA and Hispasat carried out the same kind of event in Barcelona in March during the annual DVB World Forum.

TSA specialises in the broadcast of TV signals, as well as general solutions for audiovisual systems. The company is part of Spain’s Telefónica Group and is integrated with Media Networks on a global scale. This originally Peruvian company is currently one of the biggest B2B companies for pay-TV and satellite Internet in Latin America, and is working in most of region’s countries as well as in Spain and the USA.

Turkey’s Digitürk platform could be sold off in whole or in part after the Turkish State Fund Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) seized all assets of the Çukurova Group, the majority owner of Digitürk and Show TV broadcaster.

According to local reports, TMSF is to enter talks with Providence Equity Partners, which holds the 47% of Digitürk not owned by Çukurova, with a view to selling either Çukurova’s stake or organising a joint sale of the company.

French Canal+ Group is also reported to be among the possible buyers of the DTH platform. In 2011 Canal+ Group unsuccessfully attempted to buy Providence’s shares. The company was then valued at around €1 billion.

In a statement, Digitürk assured its partners that this move will have no impact on the platform’s subscribers.

Alterna’TV selects Comcast to extend VOD

Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 30-05-2013

Alterna’TV, one of the largest channel distributors of Latin American television in the United States, has selected Comcast Media Center (CMC) to launch its line-up of video-on-demand (VOD) programming for six Spanish-language television networks.

The deal will include VOD programming from Canal 22 Internacional, Canal Once TV Mexico, Ecuavisa Internacional from Ecuador, CBTV canal Michoacan from the state of Michoacan Mexico, Telemicro Internacional from the Dominican Republic and Latin American Sports from Puerto Rico.

CMC’s VOD footprint encompasses cable systems across multiple MSOs serving more than 56 million VOD-enabled households in the US and Canada.

“Alterna’TV provides only the highest level of Hispanic programming for our partners to the growing US Hispanic community,” said Clemente Cabello, executive director of the company. “We are very pleased to work with CMC on introducing television programming from these leading sources of Latin American television to digital cable households served by our cable operator affiliates in the US.”

CMC, which distributes over 12,000 hours of video-on-demand TV programming from more than 200 sources of video entertainment per month, provides VOD content delivery services from one central location, including content acquisition, transcoding, editing and distribution. The platform operates under automated workflows and remote management capabilities to accelerate the delivery of VOD content. In addition to its role in uploading and managing television programming and related metadata, the CMC’s Web-based portal gives clients a tool to track each VOD asset from CMC receipt to distribution across the VOD platform’s footprint.

“Our relationship with Alterna’TV will serve as a very effective and efficient method for these top providers of Latin America television to expand their presence in the North American television market,” said Richard Buchanan, vice president and general manager of Comcast Media Center. “Our VOD distribution platform gives content providers an easy to use, reliable, and quality-driven solution for meeting their content distribution objectives in a way that’s very cost effective and complementary to their multi-platform delivery goals.”

Amazon green-lights first crop of online TV originals

Michelle Clancy | 30-05-2013

Amazon has green-lighted the first crop of over-the-top (OTT) original series following a crowdsourced feedback trial for several online TV pilots.

Comedy pilots Alpha House and Betas, along with kids pilots Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf, have been given the green light to begin production on a full series of episodes that will air exclusively on Prime Instant Video later this year and in early 2014.

“We are thrilled at the enthusiastic customer response to our first original pilots,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios. “We built Amazon Studios so that customers could help decide which stories would make the very best movies and TV shows. It’s exciting to see the process in motion, doing exactly what we set out to do. The success of this first set of pilots has given us the push to try this approach with even more shows — this is just the beginning.”

The company solicited feedback from Amazon Instant and LOVEFiLM customers in order to select which of the pilots would be sent into production.

“We’re thrilled to have emerged safely from this harrowing exercise in online democracy,” said Garry Trudeau, Alpha House creator. “All of us at Alpha House thank both Amazon and its wise and wonderful customer base for such a happy outcome. As the future of episodic TV packs up and moves to Seattle, we hope the audience will continue to have as much fun watching the show as we have making it.”

Akamai rolls out operator CDNs for online and hybrid video

Akamai rolls out operator CDNs for online and hybrid video

Michelle Clancy | 30-05-2013

Akamai Technologies has added Aura Lumen and Aura Spectra to its Aura Network Solutions family of operator content delivery network (CDN) technologies. Both are designed to address the growing demand for online content and video.

Aura Lumen is a licensed CDN option, while Aura Spectra is a cloud-based, CDN-as-a-service model.

The ability to use video and other online content to provide innovative new services, increase average revenue per user and reduce subscriber churn is critical to ongoing operator success. To address this new reality, operators are offering their own multiscreen video solutions as a type of OTT service. In addition, operators have sought opportunities that allow them to deploy a cost-efficient network that capitalises on traffic growth and new subscriber services without undertaking the cost and complexity associated with developing an in-house CDN.

“Many carriers are taking a very different approach to their CDN strategy than they did only a few years ago,” said Paris Burstyn, senior analyst at Ovum. “In the past, there was a strong desire for operators to build their own CDN and go it alone in the market. Now, they actively seek a partnership approach to address their needs. Working with the right partner can improve their network economics by offloading more Internet traffic, help sell enterprise and media CDN services to their customers, and leverage an open-system CDN to deliver multiscreen video experiences to their subscribers.”

LCD shipments accelerate, outstrip production

LCD shipments accelerate, outstrip production:
LCD shipments accelerate, outstrip production

Michelle Clancy | 30-05-2013

Shipments of large-sized liquid crystal displays (LCD) in March exceeded total production when measured in terms of area, the result of a deliberate move by panel manufacturers to digest accumulated inventory, according to an LCD Fab and Inventory Management Tracker from information and analytics provider IHS.

In the month, large-sized LCD displays reached a total shipment area of 11.3 million square metres, a metric showing the expanse of shipped panels during the period and distributed among the panels’ four major applications for TVs, notebooks, monitors and tablets. In comparison, production area measuring the spread and breadth of manufactured panels equated to 11 million square metres — approximately 340,000 square metres less than the total shipment area.

“March represented the first time in four months that shipments outpaced production for large-sized LCD panels,” said Ricky Park, senior manager for large-area displays at IHS. “The last time the same phenomenon took place — when shipment was higher than production — occurred in November 2012, an understandable occurrence as manufacturers raced to pump out more displays in time for the December holiday season and Lunar New Year holiday season in China. In March, panel suppliers applied the same tactic to chip away at creeping inventory, the upshot of shipments falling below production levels from December 2012 to February 2013.”

After March, however, the dynamic took a different turn. Pending final figures, forecasts show that production would catch up to shipments starting in April as both indices reach 11 million square metres, with production then exceeding shipments beginning in May. The new movement starts as the industry ramps up for the higher demand anticipated in the second half of this year.

“For all the vicissitudes of the market, panel manufacturers need to continually negotiate a delicate balancing act — between making sure there is enough inventory, and preventing the inventory at hand from ballooning and crossing into dangerous oversupply,” explained HIS. “A potent weapon in their arsenal is to turn the screws on production, intentionally limiting manufacturing capacity in fabs, while continually shipping out panels taken from both current assembly and leftover inventory in their possession. Constant vigilance is required in an industry where oversupply is usually the norm, with panel manufacturers always striving to perfect their game.”

Utilisation rates are also adjusted to achieve targets. In March, utilisation rose to 80% from 72% in February, but the pace of fabrication remained lower than was originally intended, estimated at 82% and consistent with the plan to keep production lower than shipments. Fab utilisation rates were expected to remain unchanged in April and then jump to 83% in May — again in keeping with plans for production to start growing and overtake shipments.

“Even so, panel manufacturers are not expected to exceed 85% utilisation and risk producing more than the channel can swallow. Inventory has been particularly problematic because of slow demand, but manufacturers are also careful that pricing doesn’t drop further even with anaemic demand plaguing the system,” the firm noted.

As part of a major upgrade project for RTÉ for which it has been contracted, systems integrator Eurotek has selected SGL FlashNet to provide content archive and storage management software.

The Irish state broadcaster’s File Acquisition and Server Technology (FAST) project is due to go on-air in summer 2013 and is designed to allow RTÉ to support file-based workflows, allowing assets to be easily available to a significantly increased number of users throughout the production process.

The new workflow sees SGL’s FlashNet storage management solution integrated with TMD’s Mediaflex asset management system, which provides the content management, preparation and workflow platform for FAST, and a Spectralogic T950 library. The integration between the three systems based at the RTÉ’s Dublin headquarters is claimed to provide a seamless workflow that significantly improves operational procedures.

Commented Eurotek MD Kevin Moore: “We’ve worked with SGL on a number of successful projects in the past and selected FlashNet for FAST because of its strong background and seamless integration with third-party applications.”

DISH launches Social app for Hopper DVR

Michelle Clancy | 30-05-2013

DISH Network has launched Social, the latest app for the Hopper whole-home HD DVR. It provides contextually-relevant social feeds so fans can multitask between watching a show on TV and following social posts about it on the same screen.

“Last year, Twitter saw 32 million Americans tweet about TV programming, an incredible display of consumer interest in wanting a more social experience from TV,” said Jimshade Chaudhari, director of product marketing and management at DISH. “Through our Social app, we’ve made it easier for consumers to follow social conversations and post in real-time without leaving their TV screen.”

The new Social app is accessible via DISH’s “quick launch” bar on the Hopper. Customers can link up to four Twitter and four Facebook accounts to the app, and viewers have three options for the type of content displayed in the status bar, which is located on the right side of the TV screen.

The Now Watching mode shows the Twitter feed relevant to the show or channel the user is currently watching, while My Twitter displays users’ personal Twitter feeds (if logged in) and gives them full Twitter functionality, including the ability to favourite a tweet, reply to a tweet, re-tweet a post and create a new tweet.

My Facebook displays the user’s personal Facebook feed (also requires log-in), and gives users the ability to post a status update, with the option of selecting one of several pre-drafted, easy-to-use updates.

The Social app also contains a data bar at the bottom of the viewer’s TV screen that displays stats and relevant information related to the programme being watched. Displayed information includes stats about the top areas in the country where people are tweeting about the programme, the programme’s sentiment rating, percentage of tweeters by gender and frequency of tweets.

Recently, DISH also announced enhancements to its DISH Anywhere mobile app that give consumers the ability to follow and post on Twitter and Facebook about shows they are viewing. Earlier this year, DISH announced the DISH Explorer second-screen app, which includes social features such as the ability for customers to track Twitter posts of fans of programmes they are watching, and post directly to their Twitter and Facebook accounts from their iPad.

Magic Box TV, which delivers Egyptian and Arabic channels to people living abroad, has announced that Tawfik Okasha, convicted of insulting Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, will return to TV on his own channel.

Dubbed Faraheen, the channel will be broadcast on NileSat and on IN North America on VOD and live TV.

Tawfik Okasha, known as the ‘Egyptian Glenn Beck’, was convicted last October of insulting Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, and was sentenced to a four-month jail term and fined $16.39. After the Egyptian Government dropped all charges, Okasha announced his return to television.

Farheen TV will air on satellite in the Middle East and on Magic TV Box in the US, Canada and Australia.

Tawfik Okasha remained free during his appeal of the sentence. The conviction was also protested by Amnesty International; the organisation called the sentence “a further blow to freedom of expression”. Amnesty also said it would consider Okasha a prisoner of conscience if the imprisonment were to be carried out based on the sentence.

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 30-05-2013

French regulatory body CSA wants more latitude and power to decide the way in which radio and TV frequencies are assigned. It is currently obliged to deliver authorisation as soon as frequencies are available, even if the economical or technical conditions aren’t favourable.

This is what the CSA has stated in its 2012 annual report, adding that it would like to be able to select the time to launch a call for bids from TV and radio broadcasters, taking context into account.

The CSA even advocates being given the right to authorise TV channels to change from a pay-DTT model to a free-to-air model. TV channels such as TF1, news network LCI and M6’s entertainment channel Paris Première would be the first to be interested, but the law currently doesn’t allow for this.

SES continues to grow its household reach in Benelux

SES continues to grow its household reach in Benelux:
SES (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced today that it has further increased its household reach in the Benelux countries in 2012 to over 1.2 million homes. With a 19 percent increase compared to the previous year, Belgium topped the Benelux growth in ASTRA satellite homes. In Luxemburg, the number of household receiving programmes directly from the SES fleet increased by 16 percent. These – and other new details – are the result of the annual market research SES Satellite Monitor.

The study also showed that 980,000 satellite homes in the Benelux are now capable of receiving transmissions via the 23.5 degrees East orbital position, an increase of 12 percent in 2012. In the Netherlands, 93 percent of all satellite homes are now tuned into the 23.5 degrees East orbital position, only six years after its introduction as new Direct-To-Home spot for this market.

In total, SES now reaches 97 percent of all satellite homes in the Benelux. In addition, all major cable and IPTV providers in the Benelux are using the SES satellite fleet for the redistribution of one or more channels. As a result, the total SES reach in the Benelux amounts to 11.8 million households, 94 percent of all Benelux TV homes.

HD is an important element driving the continued growth of SES’ satellite reach in the Benelux countries, as witnessed by a wide range of Dutch and Belgian HD channels via Canal Digitaal, TV Vlaanderen and TéléSAT, the M7 Group-owned satellite TV platforms for the Netherlands and Belgium. The orbital position 23.5 degrees East is also used for the transmission of the Luxembourg TV channels like RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg and Chamber TV.

The SES Satellite Monitor also confirms the increasing popularity of satellite reception among people travelling in the Benelux and beyond. More than half a million Dutch and Belgium households receive television and radio channels via the SES satellite fleet on vacation, thereby benefiting from its Europe-wide footprint coverage. The recreational satellite users can now also opt for internet via satellite provided by SES Broadband Services and its Benelux partner Hertzinger.

“We are very pleased with the results of the SES Satellite Monitor for the Benelux,” said Bill Wijdeveld, Managing Director of SES’ Benelux affiliate. “This further enhances our role in this important region, in close partnership with our customer, the M7 Group. The growth also confirms that in a market dominated by land-based infrastructures, satellite has an important role to play, in particular when it comes to innovation. We are convinced that satellite will remain the leading infrastructure for delivering the widest range of HD channels to the largest possible audience.”

Ad Council upgrades PSA distribution platform for broadcasters

Ad Council upgrades PSA distribution platform for broadcasters

Parent Category: News | 21-05-2013

The Ad Council has upgraded its digital distribution platform, PSA Central, making it a single-source destination for all Ad Council public service announcements.

The platform provides access for broadcasters to television spots in multiple HD and SD formats, as well as ads created for radio, print, online, mobile and outdoor media.

The site allows users to email PSAs directly from the site, and save them to internal and external servers. The platform also offers search capabilities, enabling direct access to PSAs by media type, file format, issue area, target audience and other preferences. The site also includes a free and secure cart feature for placing orders that remembers a user profile, including previous activity.

“Our goal is for PSA Central to become the digital delivery system of choice for PSAs and, in doing so, benefit many of the most critical social issues facing our country,” said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. “For the first time, one site provides access to our ads across all media types and new functionality will help our media partners more easily identify and support the messages that are most relevant to their audiences.”

The Ad Council’s 50 national public service campaigns are created pro bono by leading advertising agencies, and are run and aired in time and space entirely donated by the media. The Ad Council distributes its PSAs to more than 33,000 media outlets nationwide, and in 2012, the media community provided more than $1.5 billion in donated time and space for Ad Council campaigns addressing issues in the areas of health, safety, education and community.

“Comcast Spotlight has a long history of supporting important Ad Council campaigns, and this technology allows for easy search, view and access to HD files to choose the most relevant campaigns and easily push them to our markets to run,” said Charlie Thurston, president of Comcast Spotlight.

Ad Council campaigns previously used multiple distribution platforms to obtain PSAs, including a previous version of PSA Central. Media outlets also receive Ad Council PSAs in the form of hard kits that contain tapes but they can opt to receive materials only digitally.

Editor | 21-05-2013

Continuing its policy of using innovation to keep its edge in more competitive markets, Sky Sports has launched a new multi-camera highlights feature for its iPad app.

Unveiled to coincide with the UEFA Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, which it will show live, Sky claims that with its second-screen app, viewers can for the first time ever “turn their armchair into the director’s chair.”

Using live multi-camera technology from EVS, feeds from over 20 different camera angles will be available during the highlight of the European football season, allowing fans to pick their choice of highlights with the option of slow motion. The Sky Sports for iPad app is also available for F1 Race Control and the Premier League Match centre and The Masters golf.

“This is great news for the Sky Sports for iPad app, which keeps getting better and better,” commented David Gibbs, director of Sky Sports Digital Media. “This is about putting the technology into the hands of the viewer and allowing them to recapture the big moments in the final. It’s the first time we’ve offered this through our app and it’s another example of our investment in the Sky Sports viewers’ experience.”

Colombian Une to have smart TV app

Colombian Une to have smart TV app:
Colombian Une to have smart TV app

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 21-05-2013

Colombian pay-TV platform Une is to have its own smart TV app from July, offering an online TV schedule to cover programming from all the regional channels in the country.

Furore, the company developing the software, also from Colombia, is finishing the design of the app, which will be initially available for LG devices.

Channels including Tele Antioquía and Tele Medellín, which not so long ago were absent from DTT, will have now their own space on LG´s Smart TVs. “Our objective is to be a premium application that is preloaded in each TV, that is why the verification standards are higher,” said Gabriel Porras, project manager of the company.

Furore´s software is now in LG Electronics’ final certification phase which is taking place in South Korea.

The company is also working with Samsung, although no concrete project for a specific company has been announced as yet.

Currently, both Samsung and LG have around the 75% of Colombia’s smart TV market. Furore believes the smart TV market will keep growing until least 2015, and this is why it is focusing not only on the Colombian market, but also designing apps for Panama, Peru and the US.

Chile aims to bring Internet to 80% of its population

Chile aims to bring Internet to 80% of its population:
Chile aims to bring Internet to 80% of its population

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 21-05-2013

With less than 40% of Chileans having Internet access at home, and only 1% having high speed access, the Government has come up with Imagina Chile, a digital plan to expand Internet access within the country over the next seven years

The main goals of the strategy are to have 80% of houses connected to the Internet by 2020, with high speed access available to half of these. There will also be public Wi-Fi networks in all local administrations (currently available in only 25%).

The plan is also a way to increase the sales of ICT products. Currently, 5.2% of Chile´s domestic product is produced by the communication technologies field, with over 8,000 companies working in it. The Government plans are to increase this business to 10% of the GDP and the number of companies to 18,000.

Chile´s Prime Minister, Sebastián Piñera, pointed out during the project’s presentation that “innovation and entrepreneurship have to be the heads of the economy”.

Piñera also said that the DTT law should be approved soon so as not to delay the country moving forward in the digital revolution.

Over 40% of families in Uruguay are without DTT Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 21-05-2013

Over 40% of families in Uruguay are without DTT Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 21-05-2013:
Over 40% of families in Uruguay are without DTT

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 21-05-2013

Uruguay´s digital switchover is still quite a way off, but the Government is worried about the lack of DTT decoders in many of the country’s households. The switchover is set for 2015 and over 40% of families have not yet purchased any DTT technology.

Almost 100% of homes currently have a television in Uruguay, and if these TVs aren’t updated they won’t be able to receive digital signals. Around 60% of homes subscribe to a pay-TV platform, which will enable them to receive the free-to-air digital signal. The rest will need to purchase a decoder.

The Government knows that low-income families will have difficulty buying a DTT decoder and so it is considering creating a special subsidy for this purpose. The money could be assigned directly to the families or could be aimed at decreasing the price of the technology.

Other Latin American countries have taken similar measures in order to extend DTT services to all the population.

With regard to DTT regulation, Uruguay´s Government is now working on the certification of decoders and televisions. New frequencies will be approved in October 2013 and the aim is to have some channels broadcasting by the beginning of 2014.

Question Import Panasonic AG-HVX200 MXF to iMovie on Mac with best MXF Converter

Question Import Panasonic AG-HVX200 MXF to iMovie on Mac with best MXF Converter:
Import Panasonic AG-HVX200 MXF to iMovie on Mac with best MXF Converter

Convert Panasonic AG-HVX200 MXF to IAC MOV edit in iMovie

Are you trying to play Panasonic AG-HVX200 MXF on Mac QuickTime? I’m afraid that it’s impossible that P2 MXF can be accepted by Mac. Will you be going to transcode Panasonic HVX200 MXF to iMovie for special editing? Sorry, iMovie still can’t have the ability to edit HVX200 MXF footage. It’s natural that You may get confused by so many questions: what’s Panasonic HVX200? What’s MXF? And how can transfer MXF to Mac?

What’s Panasonic AG-HVX200?

Panasonic AG-HVX200 answers the demands of the professional HDTV photographer with a compact and feature packed acquisition tool, which can record HD videos on P2 Card. Learn somefeatures about Panasonic AG-HVX200:

System: NTSC (AG-HVX200) & PAL (AG-HVX200E)

Codecs supported: DVCPRO HD, DVCPRO50, DVCPRO25,DV

Audio: uncompressed 16-bit, 4-channel digital audio

VFR: 12 fps to 60 fps in 720p mode under NTSC System

12 fps to 50 fps in 720p mode under PAL System

Recording: 1080/60i, 30p, 24p 720/60p, 30p, 24p 480/60i, 30p, 24p (NTSC)

1080/50i, 25p 720/50p, 25p 576/50i, 25p (PAL)

Then, what’s MXF?

MXF, an abbreviation for Material Exchange Format, is a “container” or “wrapper” format which supports a number of different streams of coded “essence,” encoded with any of a variety of codecs, together with a metadata wrapper which describes the material contained within the MXF file.

Currently, there’re two basic MXF types: one is those where the essence (media) is stored in the same file as the metadata that refers to it. The other is that where the essence is stored in separate files to the metadata, while these files have External essence. Learn two basic MXF types, please enter:

http://www.aunsoft.com/what-is-mxf-convert-mxf-p2-mxf-to-mov-edit-mxf-fcp/

Also, there comes the last but the most important question: how to edit HVX200 MXF in iMovie?

Since iMovie can’t natively support editing HVX200 MXF files. The clips captured from Panasonic AG-HVX200 must be converted to iMovie compatible formats before importing MXF to iMovie. “What’s the best friendly format for iMovie?” I guess you must have another question. iMovie’s native format is Apple Intermediate Codec (*.mov), so we’d better transcode MXF to AIC at first. In the meantime, a MXF to AIC Converterfor Mac is of great importance. Never mind, here we’ll recommend a program called TransMXF Converter that’s especially designed for MXF Camcorders to convert and edit MXF files.

Follow the simple steps to solve this problem of importing Panasonic AG-HVX200 MXF to iMovie.

Step 1: Install Mac MXF to MOV Converter and load Panasonic AG-HPX200 MXF files to TransMXF Converter from HD Camcorder.

Step 2: Drop down format list to select iMovie and Final Cut Ex »Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) (*.mov) as output format.

Step 3: Start conversion from MXF to AIC MOV for iMovie.

With only three steps, you can easily import P2 MXF to iMovie for special editing.

DISH, Univision give kick to US football coverage

Editor | 20-05-2013

Hot on the heels of the US broadcasting live for the first time the FA Cup Final and the Copa del Rey, DISH Network and Univision are kicking on with their football offerings for the key Latino community.

While perhaps not as shocking as Wigan overcoming Manchester City, nor indeed containing the passion, exuberance and drama of Atletico Madrid triumphing over hated city rivals Real, the Copa Univision is still the fastest growing amateur soccer tournament in the US and will now be shown on DishLATINO.

Coverage will begin with the tournament hosted in Miami and DishLATINO is partnering with Copa Univision for subsequent tournaments in Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City.

“Univision Miami is thrilled to work with DishLATINO to help bring the Copa Univision soccer tournament to South Florida, an event that helps encourage our youth to be physically active and enjoy soccer as well as other family friendly activities,” said vice president and general manager Mike Rodriguez.

“Soccer is a passion for us at DishLATINO just as it is throughout the Latino community,” added Alfredo Rodriguez, DISH’s vice president of Latino marketing. “Through DishLATINO, we’ve been able to bring Latino families together to watch soccer in front of their TVs, and we’re excited to join Copa Univision in creating a playing experience they can pass down to the younger generations.”

Ecuador losing out to pay-TV piracy

Ecuador losing out to pay-TV piracy:
Ecuador losing out to pay-TV piracy

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 19-05-2013

Ecuador loses around $20 million every year because of the use of illegal FTA receptors. During 2012, 150,000 pirated pay-TV antennas were registered in the country, according to Supertel, Ecuador’s telecom authority.

The country has recently begun to participate in Alianza, the Latin American organisation against piracy. During a recent Alianza presentation, Claudio Rosas, director of Supertel, pointed out that: “the use of pirated pay-TV was outlawed last year in article 325 of the Law of Intellectual Property”.

The new regulation includes penalties of up to two years in prison for people who bring into the country, store, sell or rent any kind of pirate decoder or antenna. Despite of the changes, in 2012 only 60 decoding boxes were confiscated in Ecuador, and the owners received fines from $657 to $6,750.

Most of the Latin American countries are working with Alianza, in which 16 big telecom groups are also represented. DirecTV, Claro, Telefonica, Televisa and Fox International are making a great effort to reduce the piracy. In Latin America, nearly 15% of pay-TV users are actually not paying for the service, according to a recent Business Bureau statistic.

Survey warns Facebook of video ads relevance

Survey warns Facebook of video ads relevance:
Survey warns Facebook of video ads relevance

Editor | 19-05-2013

Online video firms may be keenly anticipating Facebook advertising but such products need to be relevant and short to prevent the social network pushing its user base away, says a research note from WeSEE.

The visual classification company’s survey revealed that just over two thirds (68%) of people say that receiving irrelevant video ads on Facebook would make them inclined to use the service less. Moreover, 30% of consumers say they would watch a video ad about a topic they have recently posted about, if the video wasn’t too long and the same number again (29%) would watch the first part of a relevant video ad, then skip it.

Even though it accepts that its sample was not the largest, the message from consumers is loud and clear, said WeSEE co-founder and chief marketing officer Adrian Moxley. “Facebook and the brands using the Facebook video ad service must consider carefully how they are determining what is relevant to each user without being too intrusive,” he argued. “Many users post photos and videos without any words to describe them and these posts can offer a real-time insight into the user’s interests and activities. If Facebook could identify what kind of visual data interests consumers, the relevance of their video ads could be greatly enhanced.”

After relevance, WeSEE’s survey found that next most important factor regarding online video adverts was length and Moxey further cautioned the advertising industry to look at the particular dynamics of the medium. “Advertisers must resist the temptation to just re-use ads designed for TV, which would typically be longer than 15 seconds, and ensure they have a dedicated campaign if they are to make Facebook video ads a success,” he concluded.

Mediaset clocks up 76 million videos in April

Mediaset clocks up 76 million videos in April

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 19-05-2013

In Spain, Mediaset led the pack in April in terms of the number of videos watched on the Internet. More than 76 million videos were viewed on the group´s sites, compared with 54 million for Atresmedia TV and 23 million for RTVE, according to a Comscore study.

In terms of audience numbers there is not much to choose between the main Spanish audiovisual groups, but on the Internet it is Mediaset, and Telecinco.es in particular, that clearly leads the ranking. It recorded 3.5 million unique viewers in April, compared with Atresmedia’s 2.6 million and RTVE, which clocked up 2.2 million.

But not everything is good news for Mediaset. Looking carefully through the data, Telecinco.es is the only website that really works in terms of audience. Some 74 million of the 76 million videos were watched on the website.

However, Mediaset is the only Spanish audiovisual group in the top 20 of unique audiences on the Internet, making it into the top 10 in terms of the number of videos watched.

The way of using the social networks is also very different among the audiovisual groups. While the videos field is clearly dominated by Mediaset, Atresmedia is making its position stronger on Twitter. The Antena 3 news programme reached 300,000 followers in April, leading the ranking over the rest of the private channels.

The 2012 NBA finals delivered record-breaking audiences on ABC that were boosted by 12% Hispanic viewership (P2+).

Turning to baseball, as part of ESPN’s multi-platform rights extension with MLB, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Deportes+, the ESPN3 broadband extension available on ESPNdeportes.com, will carry more games throughout the week, including Sunday, Monday and Wednesday night games starting next season. DISH TV, operated in Vietnam by the pay-TV group Canal + and VTV through the joint-venture VSTV, has decided to drop 21 international channels including CNN, BBC and Star World.

The decision follows new legislation, which came into effect this week, forbidding documentaries and movies to be broadcast without delivering simultaneous translation of all content into the Vietnamese language.

The French-Vietnamese channel is the first to react to the new legislation.

VSTV says that it will start carrying the channels again when they conform to the new law.

Europe home to nearly 500 VOD services

Europe home to nearly 500 VOD services:
Europe home to nearly 500 VOD services

Editor | 16-05-2013

On the eve of the Cannes Film Festival, an audit of audiovisual services industry by The European Audiovisual Observatory has discovered more than 3,000 on-demand services, 447 of which offer VOD.

The EAO’s MAVISE database identified 3,087 on-demand audiovisual products encompassing catch-up TV, newspapers’ video services and various kinds of VOD offerings such as general interest, films, TV fiction, music, animation and children’s or adult programmes. These all existed on a number of economic models financed by advertising, pay-per-view, direct subscription, subscription to digital packages and services from public broadcasters.

Of the 2,733 services established in the European Union, 447 of them film VOD service, 44 were trailer services (not including distributors’ promotional websites) and ten were film archive services. Subscription VOD (SVOD) services were seen to have proliferated in the last few months, with 76 individual products identified.

Over half (52%) of the VOD services available in one country are established in another. The EAO cautions that this development in the cross-border provision of on-demand audiovisual services might make it difficult to implement measures laid down by the most stringent national regulations for the promotion of European works or for contributing to production funding. In addition, the research revealed an increasing number of multi-platform services across fixed or mobile Internet, cable, IPTV and even DTT. A similar growing number of VOD services were also available in the form of applications for tablets or smart TVs.

The research noted that Luxembourg, Sweden, The Netherlands and the Czech Republic stand out as territories with a relatively large number of services compared to their size. The former benefits considerably from hosting the iTunes Stores — for not only other European countries but also countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia — and Netflix which is currently active in the UK and the Nordic countries and which will be rolled out in other territories. For its part, Sweden hosts Nordic-oriented services such as SF Anytime, Canal+ Digital, CDON, Headweb and Filmnet.

The Czech Republic is home to the various versions of HBO OD, which targets Central Europe, while The Netherlands is characterised by a multiplicity of small online VOD services and a few cable or IPTV platform services.

Significantly, the EAO notes the pre-eminence of US-based VOD offerings through Europe such as Google Play Movies, YouTube Movies, MUBI or Eurochannel. MAVISE also listed 207 services in May 2013 (including 123 film services) established or probably established in the US and explicitly targeting one or more European markets. Moreover, of the 53 subscription VOD services available, mostly film-based, launched by YouTube in the US in early May 2013, 29 are available in Europe and charged in euros. The research also recognised Switzerland’s, Acetrax services, bought by BSkyB in 2012, and Viewster.

New RSCC satellite for 36° East, satellite TV homes hit 24% in Russia

New RSCC satellite for 36° East, satellite TV homes hit 24% in Russia

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 16-05-2013

Russian satellite company RSCC and Eutelsat have selected Astrium to build the Express-AMU1/Eutelsat 36C satellite.

Set to launch in 2015, it will provide follow-on and expansion capacity for the Eutelsat 36A broadcast satellite operating at 36° East.

The Express-AMU1/Eutelsat 36C will be a high capacity satellite with up to 70 transponders providing coverage for broadcast services in the European part of the Russian Federation in Ku and Ka bands. It will also ensure service continuity and growth for broadcast markets developed by Eutelsat in sub-Saharan Africa.

Russian DTH users will gain access to high quality TV including HD and 3DTV, as well as to modern communications and interactive services.

The new satellite is also set to respond to the growth of the Russian market. The latest results of a survey produced by Eutelsat and Ipsos on TV reception modes and trends in Russia underscore the dynamism of its satellite broadcasting market.

Of the 53 million TV homes in Russia, 24% are equipped for direct-to-home (DTH) satellite reception, making satellite the country’s leading platform for digital television.

The number of satellite homes across Russia maintains a strong dynamic, increasing by 25% over two years from eight million to 12.6 million.

10% of these homes receive signals from more than one satellite position, taking the total number of antennas to 13.8 million. Within this, the number of homes equipped for DTH reception from 36° East has increased over 24 months to 10.7 million, up from 6.7 million.

This reflects “the high level of demand for the TricolorTV platform and the success of NTV+,” explains Eutelsat.

Over the same period, the volume of Russian channels broadcasting from 36° East has jumped to over 370 from 250.
