Wuaki.tv breaks one million subscriber barrier in Spain, UK

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 31-12-2013

The streaming TV platform Wuaki.tv has exceeded one million customers in Spain and the UK combined. The service now has 900,000 users in Spain, while in the UK it has reached over 125,000 subs in only three months.

Regarding video-on-demand (VOD), the most viewed genre was film, with Wall-E, Shrek 2 and Toy Story among the most played movies. In addition to the success of family films, series like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and the children’s series Peppa Pig were among the most requested content.

Jacinto Roca, Wuaki.tv’s CEO, points to multi-device facilities as key for the growth. “Smart TVs, tablets and consoles have played a key role in Spain’s market, while in the UK, our hybrid model between rental and subscription has been important in a market with such aggressive competition,” he explained.

Smart TVs are the favourite device for Wuaki.tv’s customers, with over 70% of all the content requests coming from these devices, although consoles have consolidated their position by showing a 200% growth since last January.

In the near future, more European countries will be added to Wuaki.tv’s network. Roca recognises that the sale of the platform to Japan’s Rakuten in 2012 strengthened international expansion, and it is now “looking to become a European reference brand for streaming entertainment consumption”.

Spanish pay-TV operators fight for World Cup rights

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 31-12-2013

Catalan producer Mediapro, which owns the 2014 World Cup broadcasting rights in Spain, is now offering pay-TV operators a premium channel showing all the matches and exclusive programming, and, according to El Mundo, every platform wants it.

Mediapro’s Gol Mundial will broadcast 24/7 from 19 May to 20 July, showing all kinds of World Cup-related information as well as the 64 matches of the competition. The bidding period ended last week and, according to the newspaper, all of the Spanish pay-TV operators have presented offers.

Jazztel, Telecable, R, Euskaltel, Cable Europa and Orange, among others, want Gol Mundial in their schedules. The market leaders Prisa (Canal+) and Telefónica (Movistar TV) have also put in bids.

Prisa was in Mediapro’s current position for the last World Cup, but this year Mediapro’s stronger financial situation made it impossible for Prisa to win the rights.

The decision as to which platform will broadcast the channel depends mainly on financial issues. But the operator’s coverage – some aren’t operating in the whole country – and the comprehensive broadcasting of the channel will also be assessed.

Rebecca Hawkes | 31-12-2013

Johannesburg-based Siyaya Free To Air TV has contracted UK technology company Motive Television to install, integrate and operate a new video-on-demand (VOD) service for South Africa.

The direct-to-home (DTH) VOD service is expected to launch via the Sentech Freevision satellite platform in the first half of 2014.

As part of the deal, Motive will receive upfront set-up fees plus operating fees based on a share of monthly VOD platform revenues. The contract will provide Motive a guaranteed minimum equivalent to £1.07 million, though the company expects this figure will net around £2 million.

Siyaya, which hopes to win a domestic television license for digital terrestrial television (DTT) broadcasting, has also selected Motive as its primary technology partner in the launch of DTT VOD services in South Africa.

The contract follows commercial terms agreed by the companies in September 2013.

Nielsen: VOD a boon for marketers and cable alike

Nielsen: VOD a boon for marketers and cable alike:
Nielsen: VOD a boon for marketers and cable alike

Michelle Clancy | 31-12-2013

We’ve been aware for some time that video-on-demand (VOD) can boost ratings for marginal programming, but those benefits also extend to marketers, according to Nielsen.

The measurement company found that distributing popular entertainment programmes as on-demand choices can have a positive impact on ratings contribution, and possibly even recapture certain demographic groups that were trending in other directions. And, it could cannibalise DVR usage.

By its very ‘on-demand’ nature, VOD is helping consumers to embrace accessing content through a selection menu as opposed to simply channel surfing. That behaviour is being reinforced by uptake for the likes of Netflix, which has a 29% penetration rate in US TV homes. But, the initiatives of cable and satellite companies in taking recently telecast programs and making them available via an on-demand menu with all national ads included could appeal to advertisers, Nielsen said.

On-demand users actually watch longer and tend to watch more of the commercials shown with their programmes. While research is still ongoing, a 30-minute programme that was studied found that on-demand users watched an average of 28 minutes, compared with digital video recorder (DVR) users’ 23 minutes and live viewers’ 20 minutes.

“At least some of the credit for this viewing trend should be attributed to the cable operators and their content deals, which have led to increasingly stocked VOD libraries, as well as the viewing delight of consumers,” the company said. “The cable operators have also placed an emphasis on improving the interfaces that allow consumers to easily access this content.”

In fact, on-demand viewers indexed highest on commercial viewing (likely attributable to the fact that fast-forwarding is often disabled). “Despite initial predictions that disabling fast-forwarding could dissuade viewers from VOD, consumers know a good deal when they see it — premium, prime time content when they want it, in exchange for commercial viewing,” Nielsen said.

The rise of VOD could also affect DVR usage, which has seen steady gains in time spent over the last half decade. However, a higher percentage of non-live commercial viewing (55%) came from VOD for people 18-24 when compared to DVR contribution in Nielsen’s latest analysis. As expanded libraries of cloud-based VOD coupled with improved interfaces continue to gain industry momentum, this could be a technological harbinger that on-demand is in prime position to change viewers’ consumption habits.

Stream TV to debut 3D-enabled 4K UltraHD TV sets

Stream TV to debut 3D-enabled 4K UltraHD TV sets:
Stream TV to debut 3D-enabled 4K UltraHD TV sets

Michelle Clancy | 31-12-2013

Stream TV Networks is marrying consumer-ready 4K TVs with 3D: its Ultra-D glasses-free adjustable 3D technology has been ported to 50” and 55” TV models, set to debut at CES 2014.

Some of the TVs will be accompanied by the seeCube-4K, an external device that converts a wide range of content – 2D or 3D stereoscopic sources – to 2160p glasses-free 3D in real time. Stream TV has added its real-time conversion technology to the new Qualcomm 8074 processor, and a second version of the TV will carry the conversion technology built into a chip, significantly reducing costs.

The Ultra-D technology converts 1080p/two million pixel content into a 4K/eight million pixel viewing experience. Users can connect their satellite or cable service, VOD, Blu-ray player, Xbox or PlayStation, as well as watch Internet content from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Baidu TV, PPStv, iQYi tv, Totou TV and other video sites.

Qualcomm’s latest 8074 processor features the new Krait 400 CPU in quad configuration, with speeds of up to 2.3GHz per core for best-in-class performance per watt, so processor performance can hold up to the more demanding processing. The new Adreno 330 GPU delivers more than two times the performance for compute applications over the current Adreno 320 GPU, capturing playback and display in 2160p video.

“Ultra-D presents a never-before-seen glasses-free 3D viewing experience,” said Mathu Rajan, CEO of Stream TV Networks. “There’s a lack of 4K content out there, but by generating millions of new pixels with depth information, we truly take advantage of what a 4K screen can offer.”

Viewer power wins in Kenya

Viewer power wins in Kenya:
Viewer power wins in Kenya

By Chris Forrester

Spurred on by the plight of millions of lost TV viewers over the Christmas period, Kenyan judges relented and granted a 45 day extension to the government’s December 24 analogue switch-off of the nation’s Nairobi transmitter.

The three appeal judges declined to give their reasons (which they will deliver at the end of January) but determined that they could grant a temporary injunction which has the effect of keeping the signals on air for 45 days until February 6.

The basis for the appeal seems to be that the State is not permitted to interfere with any properly licensed broadcaster, and that the analogue switch off amounted to interference.

One lawyer argued before the Court that with the worldwide date for digital’s introduction not being until June 2015, there is plenty of time for conversion.

Netflix: Americans set to binge watch while exercising

Netflix: Americans set to binge watch while exercising:
Netflix: Americans set to binge watch while exercising

Binge watching may be the new normal, but in 2014 a surprising number of people are willing to get off the couch for all that TV viewing. According to a recent survey among 1,000 US Internet users conducted by Internet entertainment streaming service Netflix , more than 50 per cent of respondents were willing to exercise while binge watching instead of slouching on the couch.

In the same survey, nearly half (45 per cent) of respondents agreed they would be more motivated to exercise if they had access to their favourite TV shows on-demand and commercial free while working out. Sitcoms come out on top as the favourite genre to watch while working up a sweat, with more than one in three (36 per cent) choosing humour over serialised dramas (27 per cent), Sci-Fi/fantasy (24 per cent) or reality shows (20 per cent).

That makes sense, as multiple studies show that watching entertainment, such as Netflix, while working out makes people more likely to exercise for longer periods of time and stick with their fitness regimen.

Harley Pasternak, celebrity fitness expert and New York Times bestselling author, is working with Netflix to remind people how incorporating entertainment into your workout can jump start your New Year’s resolution.

“I call it the Netflix fitness effect,” said Pasternak. “My clients have been working out with Netflix for years. It makes cardio feel easier and less boring. Whether you’re watching at home doing resistance exercises or taking your tablet or phone to the gym, Netflix gives people an extra reason to sweat.”

Pasternak, whose superstar client roster includes Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Megan Fox and many others, recommends his clients find a show they love and make a pact to only watch it while working out. “Not only does it make your workouts easier, but you end up looking forward to them more,” Pasternak said. “If you can only watch Breaking Bad when you’re on the treadmill, you’re going to find yourself wishing there were more hours in the day to workout.”

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 30-12-2013

Venezuela has officially launched a 24/7 free-to-air digital terrestrial television (DTT) channel focusing purely on army content.

The signal, TVFANB, is broadcast through a network which is already received by over half the population and is the first channel in the Government’s project to create new public channels to fill DTT’s schedule.

TVFANB’s broadcasting centre is based in Mirand and is fully equipped with HD technology. The channel is also connected to Simón Bolívar’s satellite. The project has received an investment of $8 million.

The channel broadcasts shows about daily life in the Venezuelan army and its activities in the country. In addition, the channel has signed a deal with Venezolana de Televisión and Telesur to broadcast their news programmes. The channel is the first new one to launch on Venezuela’s DTT network, which covers 53% of the country and which, according to President Nicolás Maduro, will cover 90% in 2014.

The Government’s project aims to diversify the current TV offer with public and communal signals and intends to increase the offer to 200 channels. The next channels to be aired will be TVZoon, targeting younger audiences, to be launched on 12 February, and TV Comunas.

Breaking Bad will be available for iPlus users, on computers through Yomvi’s website, and through an iOS app for iPads and smart TVs.

Since the premium channel started broadcasting in September, Canal+ has focused on international successes to strengthen its programming. Productions such as Netflix’s Orange is the New Black appear to have helped Canal+Series achieve success with Spanish series fans, although no figures have been released as yet.

LAMAC shows Argentina's pay-TV preferences by age

LAMAC shows Argentina's pay-TV preferences by age:
LAMAC shows Argentina’s pay-TV preferences by age

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 30-12-2013

The Latin American Multichannel Advertising Council (LAMAC) has presented a picture of Argentina’s pay-TV preferences according to age group.

Highlighting the homogeneity within the groups, children’s channels were found to be most popular among younger audiences and news programmes the most viewed among adults over 50.

According to the report, based on Ibope Media figures, every age has its favourite pay-TV channel, although there aren’t any surprises about what audiences like.

Argentinian kids enjoy a large number of channels, and these have the highest popularity rate in the country, with Cartoon Network, Discovery Kids, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon being among the most successful pay-TV channels.

Teenagers prefer music programmes and series, with Cosmopolitan, Boomerang and Comedy Central being among the most popular channels.

The younger group of adults, up to 34, is the most fragmented audience group. According to LAMAC, it’s very difficult to identify a specific channel with this age, and this also creates challenges for advertisers as they don’t have a clear picture of their target market.

The older the audience gets, the more concrete the preferences are. Adults between 34 and 50 choose documentaries, news and lifestyle programmes, although there is still a high fragmentation rate within this group. Discovery Channel, History, National Geographic, TLC and Fox Life are among the pay-TV channels selected by this age segment.

The over-50 audience prefers news programmes. A24, C5N, Canal 26 and CNN are the most popular among these older viewers, who also like lifestyle channels.

Editor | 30-12-2013

Al Jazeera is demanding the immediate release of four of its journalists who have been arrested by Egyptian security forces.

Correspondent Peter Greste — a veteran journalist who previously worked for Reuters, CNN and the BBC — as well as producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed and cameraman Mohamed Fawzy were seized following what Eqypt’s interior ministry called “illegal meetings” with the Muslim Brotherhood, recently declared by Cairo as a terrorist organisation.

The arrests come on the heels of clashes between police and Muslim Brotherhood supporters across Egypt. A statement by Egypt’s interior ministry statement accused the Qatar-based news organisation of broadcasting “false news” that was “damaging to national security”.

The arrests are the latest in a series of clashes between the broadcaster and the Egyptian Government. In September, Al Jazeera Media Network called in lawyers to take action over what it said was a campaign by the Egyptian Government against its journalists working in the country. In the weeks immediately following the overthrow of the Morsi Government by the Egyptian military, a large number of journalists working for Al Jazeera were arrested and detained by the security services on what the news organisation condemned as “spurious and politically motivated” charges.

4K UltraHD technology provider NanoTech Entertainment has signed a distribution agreement with Epic Eye to distribute parent company Moving Murals’ gallery of content captured at 4K resolution.

Offering imagery ranging from landscapes, cascading waterfalls and a starry night sky to urban scenes and abstract textures, Moving Murals claims to bring the equivalent of an immersive, IMAX-like experience to homes, resorts, hotels, health/wellness facilities and businesses. Each mural comprises thousands of images captured at digital cinema 4K resolution that are “stitched” together and looped indefinitely.

NanoTech will deliver the 4K UltraHD content on a variety of devices, including its own Nuvola NP-1 and NP-C 4K streaming media players, which come with pre-installed with UltraFlix, said to be the world’s first IPTV/over the top (OTT) channel that delivers 4K UltraHD content. UltraFlix offer its streaming video distribution service with what is described as a “comprehensive” library of 4KTV titles beginning January 2014.

“The power of UltraFlix and the Nuvola players to stream our murals in 4K without loss of quality is essential for delivering the rich imagery of our murals,” explained Susan Rees, President of Epic Eye. “We’re very pleased to partner with the company that is setting the industry standard for 4K delivery.”

“Moving Murals are the ‘Canvas of the Future’ and NanoTech’ UltraFlix and Nuvola products are ‘The Future of Televisions’,” said Jeff Foley, CEO of NanoTech Entertainment. “When you see the murals come alive with waves crashing on ocean rocks, tree branches swaying in the breeze, a herd of cattle wagging their tails while grazing, you’ll understand why our partnership with Moving Murals was a priority.”

TVE starts HD satellite broadcast

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 28-12-2013

Spain’s national broadcaster TVE, which last week started to broadcast Teledeporte in HD through TDT, has now decided to test the HD versions of its five channels through Hispasat.

According to the satellite’s website Satcesc.com, the channels are available via the recently activated transponder of Hispasat 1E, in the frequency 10.810-H Mhz. As well as Teledeporte HD, TVE’s other channels - TVE HD, 24 Horas HD, Clan HD and TVE Internacional HD - have started test signals. TVE will free-to-air broadcast all its signals in HD in the near future.

MTV Live HD leaves Canal+

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 28-12-2013

Spain’s Canal+ has stopped broadcasting MTV Live HD after four years on air, citing alleged technical problems with the satellite signal. It has also removed all information relating to the channel from its website, although it hasn’t ruled out a comeback for the channel.

MTV Live HD is distributed by Viacom through the Astra satellite and is still broadcast by other pay-TV platforms in Spain such as ONO. Since 2011, the channel has replaced MTVN HD, which had been on air since 2008.

It was the only music channel on Canal+’s basic package, although the classical music channel Mezzo Live HD is available in its premium packages.

MTV’s operations in Spain are going through times of change. Although not confirmed by Viacom, Prisa’s radio Cadena SER also published a few weeks ago that the DTT channel of MTV was going to leave Spain’s free-to-air schedule. The forthcoming restructuring of the digital spectrum is making the big broadcasters redraw their strategies in Spain.

TV Azteca, Tendai to build Peru's fibre infrastructure

TV Azteca, Tendai to build Peru’s fibre infrastructure

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 27-12-2013

The Mexican consortium TV Azteca-Tendai has been selected by Peru’s Communications Ministry to design, build and deploy a fibre network of over 13,000km. The project, Red Dorsal, aims to connect Lima with 22 regional capitals and 180 districts, and will involve an investment of over $320 million.

Red Dorsal is planned to complement the 4G LTE deployment started last summer and intends to increase data connections between the country’s main cities. According to Carlos Paredes, Communications’ Minister, the price of the access to the Internet and terrestrial data transport will be reduced by 80%.

The price reduction will affect the whole country’s TV and Internet operators, which will be able to set more competitive rates for the customers. IPTV is mostly unknown among a population of whom 60% pay for TV. According to ConcorTV’s latest report, the most popular pay-TV platform is cable (98%) with the rest being split between DTH and IP platforms.

Red Dorsal will start operating by the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016, although some bureaucratic processes could slow down the fibre deployment. The network will depend upon whether TV Azteca-Tendai will be able to use or rent existing infrastructures or not.

Following UEFA’s call to submit offers, TF1 has been named as the official broadcaster of the French national football team’s matches from September 2014 until the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The channel will broadcast exclusive live coverage of matches (friendlies and qualifiers) involving ‘Les Bleus’, totalling around ten matches a season, the group states in a release.

TF1 has not released the amount of the deal but according to sport daily L’Equipe, the channel is going to pour” €140 million for 40 matches which is an average of €3.5 million per match.” TF1 is currently «paying € 4.1 million per match.

French Conseil d’Etat cancels D8’s acquisition by Canal+

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 24-12-2013

As expected, the French State Council (Conseil d’Etat) has cancelled the acquisition of free DTT channel D8, and D17 both formerly owned by Bolloré,
by Canal+ Group.

This acquisition, which was submitted to the respect by Vivendi’s subsidiary of a number of obligations, had been given the green light in September 2012 by both French regulator CSA and the country’s Competition Authority. The French State Council based its current decision on the fact that this green light shows “irregularities” and is “partially illegal in the substance.” The Council requires Canal+ to strengthen broadcast obligations for French films. The decision will not apply before 1 July 2014. Canal+ Group then has six months to ask the CSA and Competition Authority for a new authorisation to and submit again. This has been seized on by groups TF1 and M6. The French State Council has given credit to both broadcasters whose complaint is mainly based on audiovisual rights and Canal+’s capacity to acquire movies and TV series.

Sigma appoints Mediaroom IPTV exec to board

Michelle Clancy | 27-12-2013

Sigma Designs has appointed Mediaroom exec Pete Thompson to its board of directors.

Thompson previously served as corporate vice president of Microsoft’s IPTV division, Mediaroom, until its purchase by Ericsson, where he now serves as the vice president of Ericsson’s Mediaroom division.

Thompson is also responsible for the development of the Natural User Interface with Microsoft Surface, and led the Xbox LIVE initiative.

“We are very excited to have Pete joining the board of directors,” said Thinh Tran, Sigma’s president and CEO. “Pete has a great reputation in our industry and will bring proven leadership experience and a diverse industry background to our board to help drive our growth strategy in parallel with our continuing restructuring efforts.”

Sigma, a provider of system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for home entertainment, connectivity and control, kicked off a broad corporate restructuring plan in late 2012 with the goal of returning to profitability. The estimated impact of the restructuring plan is an aggregate cost savings of approximately $45 million in fiscal year 2014, through headcount reduction, reduction in operating expenses and a migration to lower-cost manufacturing components and processes.

“Our restructuring efforts … are designed to align and scale our workforce and our other expenses with our markets, products and financial plan,” said Tran. “We have developed a meaningful restructuring plan that is comprehensive and includes adjustments in all functional areas of our company and regions in the world.”

Thompson added: “I am delighted to join the board of directors of Sigma Designs. “I have always admired Sigma for its technological innovations and its reputation for delivering industry-leading solutions. I am excited to help the company capitalise on its strategy and deep technology portfolio at such a transformative time for both the company and the industry.”

Virtual reality headsets are nothing new, but Avegant hopes to take the idea to the next level with the beta consumer concept of its virtual retinal display, dubbed Glyph.

The gadget is essentially a headset that integrates a video display and audio in a flip-down form factor. It has an optical engine that uses a low-powered LED, a series of custom optics and a micromirror array, which the company said produces visuals by the headset that are crisper and brighter than those from conventional display technologies. It supports a range of media consumption, from 3D movies to desktop environments to streamed television shows. Integrated head tracking also allows for immersive, responsive gaming that is compatible with all of the latest consoles and games.

“We’ve created a premium media experience that people can use with music, movies and games on any device they already own, including their smartphone,” said Allan Evans, CTO of Avegant. “Integrating high-end audio with the Glyph and packaging it into a forward-thinking design is critical to a great experience.”

The company is debuting Glyph at CES 2014 and consumer units will be available by Kickstarter on January 22 for $499, shipping later in the year.

Call it a battle of the Korean giants: Both Samsung and LG have announced that they will bring 105-inch, ultra-widescreen curved UltraHD TVs to CES 2014.

Both are LED sets with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 5,120 x 2,160 resolution, or 11 million pixels. That’s 1.3 times standard UltraHD.

There are differences between the two: Samsung’s features the same Quadramatic Pictures upscaling as its current UHD TVs, the F9000 Series. LG’s entry meanwhile has an improved Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology developed by its Electronics and Display Divisions.

Neither have announced prices or release dates, but consider this: Samsung charges about $40,000 for the 84-inch Ultra HD TV it launched at CES last year.

Pay-TV, Energy Department partner to boost STB energy efficiency

pay tv, energy department, green technology, set top box, stb, energy efficiency, standards, united states, north america

The U.S. Energy Department is teaming up with green advocates and the pay-TV industry to boost energy efficiency standards for pay-TV set-top boxes by 10% to 45% (depending on box type) by 2017, which will save more than $1 billion on consumer energy bills annually.

The energy savings would eliminate the need for three power plants and prevent 5 million tons of C02 emissions per year, saving enough electricity each year to power 700,000 homes.

The Energy Department is partnering with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP), the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) on a non-regulatory initiative that will result in significant energy savings for more than 90 million U.S. homes. Comcast, Time Warner, AT&T and most other major cable, satellite and IPTV providers are also on board.

“These energy efficiency standards reflect a collaborative approach among the Energy Department, the pay-TV industry and energy efficiency groups – building on more than three decades of common-sense efficiency standards that are saving American families and businesses hundreds of billions of dollars,” said Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. “The set-top box efficiency standards will save families money by saving energy, while delivering high quality appliances for consumers that keep pace with technological innovation.”

As consumer demand for digital video recorders and high-definition set-top boxes grows, actual consumer savings are likely to be even greater. The introduction of whole-home devices will also further reduce the overall energy footprint.

“In 2011, I urged the CEOs of every major television service provider to work together to introduce more energy efficient set-top boxes,” said Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). “At the time, set-top boxes were costing Americans $3 billion in electricity charges each year—with $2 billion wasted when televisions were not being used.”

The agreement, which runs through 2017, covers all types of set-top boxes from pay-TV providers, including cable, satellite and telephone companies. The agreement also requires the pay-TV industry to publicly report model-specific set-top box energy use and requires an annual audit of service providers by an independent auditor to ensure boxes are performing at the efficiency levels specified in the agreement. The Energy Department also retains its authority to test set-top boxes under the Energy Star verification program, which provides another verification tool to measure the efficiency of set-top boxes.

This non-regulatory agreement supports the Energy Department’s broader efforts to increasethe energy efficiency of residential and commercial appliances and products. Under the Obama Administration, the Department has finalized new efficiency standards for more than 30 household and commercial products, which are estimated to save consumers a total of more than $400 billion through 2030.

“TNT has been the primary television home to Tolkien’s Middle Earth for nearly a decade, beginning with our network television premieres of The Lord of the Rings trilogy,” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies. “We’re proud to continue our association with these extraordinary and enormously popular epics with the acquisition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

French Conseil d’Etat cancels D8’s acquisition by Canal+

French Conseil d’Etat cancels D8’s acquisition by Canal+

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 24-12-2013

As expected, the French State Council (Conseil d’Etat) has cancelled the acquisition of free DTT channel D8, and D17 both formerly owned by Bolloré, by Canal+ Group.

Spanish regional cable operator Telecable is preparing its Tedi interactive and on-demand (VOD) TV platform TV to go mobile.

Tedi has already been ported to the online platform and the mobile service wild offer catch-up functionality just like the DVR capability running on the STB version.

The service offers 40 channels, 20 of which are already broadcasting in HD, and the VOD section has now over 600 films.

The regional TV operator focuses on a small market in northern Spain, where the competition in cable pay-TV isn’t really strong. It has a stable client base but its latest financial figures showed a need for new services to consolidate its user base.

Editor | 24-12-2013

As part of a strategic partnership, leading production house Endemol has bought a 33% share of Reshet, one of Israel’s leading broadcasters.

The move is Endemol’s second acquisition in the country after taking in April 2013 a controlling share in Israel’s leading independent producer Kuperman, which has now become Endemol Israel.

Based in Tel Aviv, Reshet has undergone significant growth in recent years and is currently the highest rating channel in the country, with local versions of international offerings as well as its own locally created formats such as ‘Comedians at Work’, ‘Irreversible’ and ‘State of the Nation’.

The partnership will see Endemol use its expertise in the creation, production and distribution of content with Reshet’s platform. The two will collaborate on launching new original content created and produced by Endemol for the Israeli market on Reshet’s platforms, which will be shared and exploited throughout Endemol’s worldwide network. Endemol will distribute new shows internationally, as well as produce Israeli versions of worldwide hits for the broadcaster.

Endemol added that its investment will enable Reshet to build on its recent successful growth in ratings via increased investment in local shows and new cross-platform opportunities, with both parties combining strengths in growth areas such as brand extensions, second screen applications, mobile and digital video.

Commented CEO Just Spee: “Israel is one of the world’s most innovative and creative markets; delivering exciting and successful formats with international appeal. Reshet is already a leading broadcaster in the region and with an outstanding management team the company is strongly positioned to continue its impressive growth. By joining forces with them we are able to significantly build our capacity to create new original, multi-platform content with global potential, which will be shared among Endemol’s worldwide creative network.”

For the broadcaster’s part, Avi Zvi, Reshet CEO remarked: “We are extremely excited about this partnership; Endemol choosing to invest in our company is a strong vote of confidence and recognition, not only in Reshet but also in the creativity and innovation of the Israeli TV market that has been renowned worldwide in recent years. Endemol’s vast experience in the international arena will allow Israel’s vibrant creative industry to bring premium programming to the global market, efficiently and successfully. Strengthening Reshet’s ownership structure with one of the largest television and format companies in the world will accelerate Reshet’s growth in both local and international markets.”

FCC approves Tribune application for major TV affiliate takeover

Michelle Clancy | 23-12-2013

The Federal Communications Commission has approved Tribune Company’s application to assume control of broadcast licenses held by subsidiaries of Local TV Holdings.

The announcement paves the way for Tribune to acquire 16 of Local TV’s television stations in 14 markets across the US and will see the creation of the largest combined independent broadcast group and content creator in the United States.

“On behalf of thousands of Tribune and Local TV employees across the country, I want to thank the Commission for reaching this decision; we are extremely pleased to move forward with the transaction,” said Peter Liguori, Tribune’s president and CEO.

“The logic and investment thesis underlining our acquisition of Local TV is as powerful as it is simple—in a fragmenting media landscape, there is value in scale, for our viewers, advertisers, networks, cable and satellite partners and, most important, the communities we serve. We are very excited to bring the employees of these two great companies together.”

The Commission also approved the transfer of broadcast licenses for three local TV stations in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Norfolk, VA, to Dreamcatcher Broadcasting.
