Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 30-11-2013

Spanish film channel MIS Películas TV intends to jump into the US Hispanic market, after two months broadcasting through LibertyPR in Puerto Rico.

The channel has started a marketing campaign in Florida, aimed at catching the Hispanic audience and TV platforms’ interest. It sponsored the Spanish movie festival Recent Cinema from Spain, held last weekend in Miami, where the channel was also formally presented in front of the festival audience.

“It’s the most ambitious project we have ever worked on”, explained Enrique Cerezo, the channel’s president. “After over two years preparing everything, the signal has become real and lands in a very competitive market presenting a clear added value: being the only channel with 100% Spanish films”.

MIS Películas TV is a project of Spanish distribution company Videomercury Films, which has one of the largest portfolios of Spanish films from all genres and periods.

Pay-TV penetration reaches 40% in Bolivia's cities

Pay-TV penetration reaches 40% in Bolivia's cities:
Pay-TV penetration reaches 40% in Bolivia’s cities

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 30-11-2013

Bolivia’s pay-TV has reached 40% penetration in the cities of Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz, compared with 17% in 2005, according to the telecom authority ATT.

The cable and satellite market is clearly on the increase in a country where the pay-TV business was residual not so many years ago. Recently Tigo Millicom announced it had bought Multivisión, which operates in the named cities. It intends to modernise the platform and will offer HD, DVR, pay-per-view and a TV everywhere service. A few days later Entel published its intention to launch direct-to-home (DTH) via the country’s new satellite, which will be launched next month.

According to ATT figures, the latest movements in the market are due to a changing market, which is small compared with other Latin American countries, but seems to be offering great opportunities.

Currently, there are 64 companies working in the pay-TV market in Bolivia, with 12 of them covering the whole country. The service offer has barely grown since last year, but the competition and the lower prices has driven an increase in customers.

Most of the platforms are still between the analogue and the digital system, and there are few offering, for example, HD broadcasting. The highest competition is in Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz, where Cotas Cable TV, Multivisión, ITS, Digital and TuVes, among others, fight for the increasing number of customers.

FIC makes new senior appointments for Asia Pacific and the Middle East

Louise Duffy | 29-11-2013

FOX International Channels (FIC) Asia has made senior appointments into two newly created positions.

Helena Choe started in her new role on 18 November as vice president of syndication while Rahul Sood will assume the role of vice president of affiliate sales and commercial on 9 December. Both executives’ geographic remit will cover Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

FIC aims to expand its presence in the television and content industry across the region with these two appointments.

Based in Hong Kong, Choe will work with channel and business development teams, as well as country managers to establish region-wide syndication policies and drive the distribution of FIC Asia’s sports, factual and entertainment content rights to multiple platforms.

She joins FIC from sports rights marketing agency Sportfive International, where she was managing director of the Hong Kong office, leading activities for Sportfive’s TV rights in Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, and digital rights across Asia Pacific.

Sood will operate out of Singapore and will be responsible for FIC’s sales and channel development of new markets across the region, with emphasis on newly emerging markets. He will also be developing FIC’s sales strategy for commercial establishments such as hotels and other out-of-home opportunities.

In addition, Rahul will focus on the international distribution beyond APAC and the Middle East of FIC’s suite of Chinese channels, which includes SCM, the network’s Chinese movies channel. This emphasis underscores FIC’s commitment to promoting Chinese-language content beyond Asia and taking the SCM brand global.

Prior to joining FIC, Sood spent ten years as head of affiliate sales and network distribution at NDTV, one of India’s leading news networks.

Choe and Sood will report to Alex Lambeek, executive vice president of affiliate partnerships and syndication for Asia Pacific and the Middle East at FIC.

“Both Helena and Rahul bring a great wealth of experience to FOX International Channels and we are very pleased to welcome them on board,” said Lambeek. “Their appointments serve to demonstrate our commitment to work closely with our affiliate partners to further FIC’s presence across Asia Pacific and the Middle East.”

Choe said: “I am pleased to be joining the leader in regional broadcasting and an internationally renowned brand. With sports, factual and entertainment under FIC Asia’s portfolio, I look forward to working with great content across all different genres.”

Sood commented: “It’s a real honour to join a network with such a strong commitment to building great partnerships with affiliates. I look forward to expanding FIC’s distribution network and working closely with existing and new platform partners to build the business together.”

London Live makes first commissions for launch

London Live makes first commissions for launch:
London Live makes first commissions for launch

Editor | 29-11-2013

Just as the first UK local TV station comes on-stream, perhaps the most awaited of the stations, London Live, has announced its launch commissions.

Owned by London’s most read newspaper, The Evening Standard, London Live was awarded the 12-year licence in February 2013 to broadcast the first London-centric TV channel which is scheduled to launch on Freeview, Sky, Virgin, online TV and mobile TV devices in spring 2014.

Targeting an audience of young, modern and what London Live calls “urban social explorers” based in the capital, the channel will offer Londoners the latest in local news, current affairs, sports, arts, events and entertainment. It will transmit 24/7 via DTT and satellite channels as well as multiscreen IP delivery. Viewers will be able to watch the channel on television and online, via PCs and mobile devices.

The new entertainment TV channel for London insists that its new shows will deliver the channel’s promise of fresh and emerging talent and in doing so has commissioned three new series; two factual entertainment lifestyle and one entertainment, as well as a ground-breaking run of comedy pilots to kick-start the programming slate for its spring 2014 launch.

The channel’s head of programming, Jonathan Boseley, has commissioned Jamie Oliver’s Fresh One to make a 30 x 30’ series about foodies based in London; Renowned Films has been given the green light to produce sports lifestyle show F2 Kicks Off; Nerd TV’s The Anti Social Network, developed with creative agency Holler, is a hidden camera game where participants are invited to hand over control of their social network profiles to a panel of some of the world’s leading comedy writers.

In addition a ‘comedy hotspot’ season has also been created for the launch schedule, designed to showcase pilots created by emerging comedy producers, which will use audience feedback to guide London Lives’ commissioning for a whole series.

Commenting on the launch roster, Boseley said: “I am thrilled to be announcing our first slate of original commissions. Our ambition is to blend emerging and established talent to create talked about, engaging and noisy programming – an ethos shared by Fresh One, Renowned Films and Nerd TV. We are excited to be working with all three parties before the pilots have even been made, such is our confidence that these concepts will deliver content that Londoners will love.”

“We will be really excited to see our food series air on London Live,” added Zoe Collins, director of food at Fresh One. “This is an incredibly exciting time in broadcasting and we are very proud to be part of it, especially with a series celebrating a key part of London culture.”

Synapse over-the-top (OTT) services are available on compatible Freeview HDTVs and set-top boxes via a dedicated channel number listed in the electronic programme guide (EPG) and accessed directly by Freeview viewers using their existing remote control in exactly the same way as traditional over-the-air (OTA) channels.

The basic DTT platform currently claims over 20 million homes. Available for £6.99 a month via a Freeview HD connected TV or box, VuTV offers access a premium range of channels including Comedy Central, MTV, CNN, Lifetime, HISTORY, H2, Crime & Investigation Network, Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito.

Leading UK ratings agency BARB will measure viewing for all VuTV channels, providing broadcasters with an additional platform through which to monetise their content via incremental advertising impacts. VuTV will also offer broadcasters granular analytics of consumers’ viewing behaviour.

Commenting on what the launch could mean for its channels, Arran Tindall, SVP, commercial and content distribution, Viacom International Media Networks, UK, Australia, Russia and Eastern Europe, said: “Viacom aims to make its content and channel brands available on whichever platform our audience wants to access them, so it’s great news that Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon will, for the first time, now be accessible via broadband connected digital terrestrial TV in the UK. The VuTV service is an easy, affordable way for suitable Freeview households to sample some of the very best channels that subscription TV in the UK has to offer.”

Rising Star shines brighter with ITV acquisition

Rising Star shines brighter with ITV acquisition

Editor | 29-11-2013

Following two deals in the last few days in Spain and Hungary, Keshet International has closed a deal for its hit talent show Rising Star with the UK’s leading independent broadcaster ITV.

The interactive talent format is claimed to hail a new era in home entertainment, marking the first real-time voting by viewers via a free app— ‘TV app to you’— that is fully integrated into the show.

If the performer secures 70% of the viewers’ and the judges’ votes, the screen rises in the studio and the new star is revealed. The UK format will be co-produced by ITV Studios and the global distribution and production arm of Keshet Media Group.

The acquisition follows on from the success of the format following its unveiling at MIPCOM earlier this year which has already resulted in deals with channels and producers in Hungary (TV2), Italy (Toro), France (M6 Group), Russia (Rossiya1), Germany (RTL), Nordics (Nordisk), ABC for the US market and Atresmedia in Spain.

“ITV’s track record in launching globally successful music and talent shows makes it the natural UK home for … Rising Star,” said Alon Shtruzman, managing director, Keshet International. “The UK’s leading commercial network joins a large cast of leading broadcasters to come on board, and we look forward to working with its brilliant team to bring this interactive live experience to British audiences.”

ITV’s director of entertainment and comedy, Elaine Bedell, added: “It’s rare that you find a genuinely innovative new entertainment format - but Keshet have come up with one and I’m very pleased that it will now be on ITV. The bold real-time voting element means that viewers’ votes control every twist and turn of the live programme - and that makes for an incredibly dramatic, emotional and exciting show.”

Pay-TV consumption grows over 50% among Mexican housewives

Pay-TV consumption grows over 50% among Mexican housewives:
Pay-TV consumption grows over 50% among Mexican housewives

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 28-11-2013

Mexico’s pay-TV consumption has risen over 50% among housewives, reaching an average share of 5.6% between January and October, and topping the country’s audience figures, says the latest report from LAMAC.

Using Ibope Media data, LAMAC reveals the increasing use of pay-TV among housewives, especially among the younger segment, between 18 and 45-years-old. “We keep observing a growing tendency in pay-TV ratings, proving that the audience habits in Mexico are drastically changing and Mexicans are abandoning the traditional consumption routines,” explained Federico Baumgartner, LAMAC’s country manager in Mexico.

According to the advertising council, while pay-TV consumption has been growing, the traditional channels are dropping viewers. One of Mexico’s largest free-to-air channels, TV Azteca, has seen a 43% audience decrease since January. According to LAMAC, this shows how fast habits are changing, especially looking at housewives between 18-35 who have increased their pay-TV consumption by 90%.

The research also shows that the growth has been even greater among LAMAC’s channels, whose audience has risen by up to 117% in some cases. “The housewife target is very important for those companies which want to commercialise a mass product, which is why advertisers should look carefully at this figures,” added Baumgartner.

Documentary, factual and arts programmes will include Afghanistan: The Australian War; Brilliant Creatures, which profiles four Aussies who shook the world; The Flying Miners, the story of a unique Australian work lifestyle; and, filmed in front of a live studio audience, Save Your Life Tonight, which puts Australia’s health under the spotlight.

For the first time, iview will premiere two programs created especially for the online service: Fresh Blood, a sketch comedy initiative that will uncover Australia’s brightest young talent, and Wastelander Panda, a story of loyalty and betrayal in an environment where no-one can survive alone.

In late 2014, iview will offer a new pay-to-view on-demand service, showing ABC programmes from the archives.

Altice buys Orange Dominicana for $1.4 billion

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 28-11-2013

Orange has finally closed a deal to sell its Dominican Republic subsidiary, with the Luxembourg firm Altice paying $1.4 billion for it, according to Reuters.

“The deal brings important income to Orange, getting to sell an asset which is not central to the company,” said an analyst from Espirito Santo bank.

Orange started the tender process in the summer in a move that surprised the industry. On 22 November, Stephane Richard, Orange’s CEO, said four large companies had shown interest in purchasing Orange Dominicana for about €1 billion ($1.3 billion). Cable & Wireless, Digicel from Jamaica and the national group León Jimenes were said to be interested in buying the subsidiary.

While the French telco is looking to leave the Latin American market, Altice is trying to expand its TV, Internet, telephone and wireless business in the region. The telco has already purchased Tricom SA and Global Interlink in the Dominican Republic.

For its part, Orange is trying to abandon its secondary markets to focus on Europe. The French operator intends to invest some of the income received through this latest deal in Spain, Belgium, Poland and Romania, while also using the funds to reduce the group’s debt.

Hard choices ahead for BBC but quality will come first, assures DG

Joseph O’Halloran | 28-11-2013

Quality of material, particularly in the arts, will not be compromised at a BBC compelled to find new ways of giving viewers and listeners what they want, when they want it Director-General Tony Hall has assured.

Indeed in a speech to the UK’s Voice of the Listener & Viewer Conference, Hall granted that despite the challenges of a “fast-changing world”, with hard choices to be made in terms of output and direction, the corporation would put quality and value for money first.

He said: “There’s a fundamental shift happening. I want a BBC that feels different, where our audiences are on the inside, helping us to be the best we can be. I want to make three arguments: first, that the existence of the BBC is essential to the production of high-quality programmes and content; second, that licence fee payers have a right to expect not just quality but also value for money; third, that making continual efficiency savings leaves the BBC facing very hard choices about the work it does. And we will need …the viewer, the listener and the licence fee payer as our guide and support as we make these decisions.”

Noting the recent success of dramas such as Top Of The Lake, Luther, Sherlock and Peaky Blinders, The Fall and The Village, Hall assured that that the broadcasting corporation would make a bigger than ever commitment to not only this area but also to music and the arts in general.

Outlining the next steps Hall revealed that the he BBC’s mission was “to do more, to go further, to challenge ourselves to do better,” but that there would also be “hard choices to come.” Hall conceded that he could not highlight any specific choices at present but he reiterated the BBC’s guarantee not to comprise quality, or in his words, not to “stretch the elastic too thin.”

He concluded: “The BBC will be making the argument about its future through the actions it takes. We are going to make great dramas, great arts, great programmes. We are going to provide the best news service in the world. We are going to inspire learning and we are going to carry on pushing new technology. Our BBC…will stand for quality, for creativity, for wit, for intelligence, for imagination. And it will make the argument for its value with every minute it is on air and online.”

Ecuador to export fibre to Latin America

Ecuador to export fibre to Latin America

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 28-11-2013

Ecuador will stop importing fibre for its telecoms industry and instead become an exporter, following the announcement that Telconet is to build Latham Fiberhome, the first fibre factory in the country, through a deal with the Chinese telecoms group Fiberhome along with state support.

The factory will produce fibre for the national market and will try to cover some of the demand in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. The projects goes together with the polyethylene production in the country’s oil refineries. “Almost all the raw material for communications will be produced in Ecuador,” explained Jaime Guerrero, Ecuador’s Minister of Telecommunications.

The factory is planned to be the largest of its kind in Latin America and reinforces the increasing collaboration with China in the region’s infrastructure. The Government intends to significantly reduce the material cost for local fibre Internet and TV providers, who currently rely on imports.

Ecuador has been experiencing great growth in the telecoms market during the last year. The improvement in the country’s financial situation is driving an increase in demand, and investments are making digital technologies available for a growing number of potential customers. “The country is moving towards a full digital society,” said the Minister.

French Court rejects Endemol’s appeal against Banijay

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 27-11-2013

The French Court of Cassation has rejected Endemol’s appeal against a judgement made in favour of rival Banijay, which it had previously accused of unfair competition regarding a reality tv format.

The Court ruled that Banijay had committed no prejudicial act in developing and producing the reality format Dilemme for W9 in 2010, although Endemol argued it picked up elements from its show from TF1 Secret Story, a spin-off of Loft Story.

In March 2011, Endemol was initially granted €1 million in damages, but the judgement was overturned and Endemol was forced to pay the money back along with an additional €100,000 in legal costs.

Banijay International then started to reintroduce the Dilemme format, produced through its subsidiary ALJ Productions, to its catalogue.

Jörn Krieger | 27-11-2013

Germany’s national telco Deutsche Telekom will provide its home town of Bonn with free-of-charge wireless Internet access.

From 15 January 2014, the owners of Wi-Fi-capable smartphones, laptops and tablets will be able to surf the net for free for 30 minutes per day through 150 hotspots across the city.

The new service can be used by all locals, business travellers and tourists from Germany and abroad independent of their own mobile network operator. If users want to continue using the Wi-Fi network after the free 30-minute period has expired, they can, for example, purchase a hotspot day-pass for €4.95.

The costs for the project, which has been set up initially for six months in collaboration with the city of Bonn, will be covered by Deutsche Telekom. If the service turns out to be popular an extension is possible, according to Telekom, if further collaboration partners can be found.

The new 30-minute free surfing proposition will be integrated into the city of Bonn’s new smartphone app on which it will be available on the starting page. Users can register for it directly within the app. It will also be possible to access the service through the reception device’s Web browser.

With the move, Telekom follows cable operators Kabel Deutschland and NetCologne that have also set up free Wi-Fi hotspot networks.

Mike Young Productions files $5MN lawsuit against Moonscoop US

Mike Young Productions files $5MN lawsuit against Moonscoop US:
Mike Young Productions files $5MN lawsuit against Moonscoop US

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 27-11-2013

US animation studio Mike Young Productions (MYP) is taking legal action against Moonscoop US Holdings, alleging that it blocked the company’s attempt to take over the US arm of the troubled French animation production company Moonscoop.

Moonscoop US Holdings is a subsidiary of the Paris-based Moonscoop SA, co-founded by brothers Christophe and Benoît Di Sabatino, which filed for bankruptcy a few months ago.

Moonscoop US Holdings owns 51% of the Los Angeles-based Moonscoop LLC, while Mike Young Productions holds the remaining 49%.

Mike Young Productions has asked the Superior Court to prevent Moonscoop US Holdings from interfering with its rights under the operating agreement. It is seeking $5 million in damages for “breach of contract, breach of faith, breach of fiduciary duty, intentional interference with prospective economic advantage, and violation of business and professions codes”.

“We are saddened by the financial events at Moonscoop France which have led them to file a petition for court protection from their creditors,” Mike Young, co-founder and partner, said in a statement.

“Our position was, and is, that we want to buy back the shares of our US company. We have made several attempts to buy back our company, however this process is being controlled by a Receiver (Trustee) out of France which has made the process very difficult. The lawsuit is a by-product of our frustration where we believe that our rights under the operating agreement are being ignored and we will take all steps to protect our US-based company.”

According to the lawsuit filed in the Superior Court, Mike Young Productions had tried to buy out Moonscoop US Holding’s 51% of Moonscoop LLC prior to the French Moonscoop entering into administration. “The offer was refused. The French Moonscoop instead offered for sale the holding company’s assets to satisfy its creditors, though blocking Young’s attempts to buy the holding company’s assets,” MYP added.

The US company argues that the parties have an operating agreement that gives it the right, through Moonscoop LLC, to buy the holding company’s shares. But an alleged “right of first offer” bars the transfer of the holding company’s assets unless another buyer makes a better offer.

According to Sgarbi, all content is controlled and the parents have the opportunity to decide which shows their children are allowed to watch.

YouYn promises new content every week, but has already started with a large portfolio of Brazil’s most popular children’s shows including Peixonauta, Galinha Pintadinha, Caillou, Os Pesquerruchos, Ursinhos Carnhosos and Johny Test of Zoboomafoo.

The platform is advert-free and the app is already available for iOS, Android and LG Smart TVs.

Vivendi's demerger plan approved, Bolloré to become chairman

Vivendi’s demerger plan approved, Bolloré to become chairman

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 26-11-2013

Vincent Bolloré will become chairman of Vivendi following the company’s demerger plan which has been approved by its supervisory board.

The group aims to become an international media group, bringing together brands in the production and distribution of original content.

Arnaud de Puyfontaine has been appointed senior executive vice president, media and content activities and will join the group in early 2014. He is currently CEO of Hearst Magazines UK and executive VP of Hearst Magazines International.

The demerger between media and telecoms assets could see the distribution of SFR shares to Vivendi shareholders on the day of the transaction. This would offer them the opportunity to invest in two separate entities listed on the stock market and valued according to the specifics of their respective sectors.

“The demerger plan would also offer SFR greater strategic autonomy to seize opportunities in a transforming market, reflecting the growing number of services and high speed broadband access in an environment with a huge increase in usage,” the group explains.

The plan will be submitted to the relevant Works Councils and regulatory authorities. Details will be presented at a later stage as Vivendi aims to include it on the agenda of the next annual shareholders’ meeting at the end of June 2014.

Until the completion of the demerger, Vivendi’s management board, chaired by Jean-François Dubos, will comprise Jean-Yves Charlier, chairman and CEO of SFR, and Arnaud de Puyfontaine.

FOX International Channels Asia boosts sports business

FOX International Channels Asia boosts sports business:
FOX International Channels Asia boosts sports business

Louise Duffy | 26-11-2013

FOX International Channels (FIC) Asia has given its sports channels FOX Sports and STAR Sports a boost with a focused strategy that it hopes will result in higher viewership and returns.

Initiatives include the acquisition of signature sports events, the creation of localised sports hubs and new programming.

FIC has secured the rights of the French Open, adding to its tennis Grand Slams that also include The Championship, Wimbledon and The Australian Open.

Other sports events include the Bundesliga, featuring top clubs like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund; the Golf PGA Championship and World Golf Championship; the World Athletics Championship; Formula E (motor sports); and IBL (badminton).

FIC has created two new local sports hubs responsible for creating and distributing localised feeds. Since 1 October, Taiwan has been broadcasting three dedicated sports channels in Mandarin as well as producing a Taiwan version of FOX Sports’ flagship news show FOX Sports Central.

In addition, Hong Kong has been broadcasting sports channels in HD since 1 October.

FIC recently relaunched its signature news programme FOX Sports Central by almost doubling the content, making it seven days a week and a one-hour late night edition at 11pm in addition to the 7pm show.

With an aim to deliver sports content across platforms and devices, FOX Sports Plus HD can now be accessed through mobile and through the internet.

Joon Lee, executive VP of content and communications, Asia Pacific and Middle East at FOX International Channels, said: “With the successful acquisition of multiple new rights of top tier sports properties, creation of multiple local sports hubs, and enhanced programming well ahead of plan, our sports business is in a significantly better position than we were at even six months ago. We are very well placed to continue to offer fans and our business partners the most comprehensive sports entertainment offering across the region.”

BBC Worldwide to open South African office

BBC Worldwide to open South African office:
BBC Worldwide to open South African office

Rebecca Hawkes | 25-11-2013

xThe BBC is to open a South African division to boost local programming, content sales and digital delivery, with recruitment already underway for a Johannesburg-based regional manager.

BBC Worldwide, the UK broadcaster’s commercial arm, operates a portfolio of BBC channels – including BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies, and BBC World News – on MultiChoice’s DStv pay-TV platform across sub-Saharan Africa.

Ian McDonaugh, executive vice president of BBC Worldwide, said the confidence the UK broadcaster has in the growing South African market and its strong relationship with DStv has prompted the decision, according to the Independent Online.

The BBC’s audience share has doubled in the five years since the BBC channels were launched in South Africa on DStv, says McDonaugh, who claims BBC Knowledge has also recorded 26% share in 2013.

The first priority for the new regional manager will be to consolidate the broadcaster’s success, build on local commissioning success such as Come Dine With Me South Africa, and develop content sales to other broadcasters.

Developing the BBC’s presence in the rest of Africa will be another important facet of the new role, McDonaugh told local journalists at a BBC Worldwide Upfront event in Johannesburg.

Arqaam raises OSN valuation ahead of possible IPO

November 25, 2013

Dubai-based Arqaam Capital has raised its estimate of pay TV group OSN’s worth from US$2.5 billion (€1.8 billion) to US$4.3 billion ahead of the company’s potential IPO.

Arqaam said that OSN’s acquisition of South Asian channel provider Pehla Media & Entertainment in August would boost its performance. According to Arqaam, OSN posted revenue growth of 24% and subscriber growth of 22% in the first nine months of this year.

Reuters reported last month that private equity investor Stanford Marine Group hired Deutsche Bank and Golgman Sachs to look at a stock market listing in London. OSN’s largest investor, Kuwait private equity and investment firm KIPCO, which holds a 60.5% stake in the operator, said in June that it had hired Rothschild Group to advise on the potential IPO.
