Orange and Vodafone to bring FTTH to nearly one million Spanish homes

Orange and Vodafone to bring FTTH to nearly one million Spanish homes:
Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 01-09-2013

Orange and Vodafone plan to bring fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) to at least 800,000 Spanish houses by March next year.

Both telcos have presented the initial figures of their FTTH implementation in Spain. According to Europa Press, the joint effort has already had results in 12 cities, where the fibre network is already set and will start working under commercial offers by the end of the year. Madrid, Barcelona, Seville or Malaga are among the first places to have Orange and Vodafone FTTH, which both companies plan to bring to 50 cities and more than 6 million houses by 2017.

The first phase of the project has meant a €200 million investment, an amount that is expected to increase to €1,000 million within four years.

Under the agreement signed in July with Movistar, Orange and Vodafone are also connecting its horizontal network to the vertical installations owned by Telefónica inside the buildings. Where there is no Movistar fibre, the other two companies are building their own, which Movistar could eventually use in the future.
