Atresmedia extends Formula One broadcasting rights
Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 19-01-2014
Atresmedia has managed to purchase Formula One rights for two more seasons, despite the apparently high competition to buy them. The rights’ owner Mediapro has decided to sell them again to Atresmedia, which has also broadcast the past two seasons through its main channel Antena 3.
There had been a lot of speculation since Mediapro opened the bid in December, as most of Spain’s networks had tabled an offer, including both free-to-air and pay-TV. Formula One is among the most-viewed events on Spanish TV, reaching an average of 39.1% in 2012 and 35.6% last year, winning over, for example, the Champions League.
Antena 3, Nitro and the online platform Antena3.com will now broadcast the 2014 and 2015 editions. Atresmedia therefore gets a handle on the only sports audience success guaranteed on its channels, as Mediaset has most of the football and basketball rights.
Telefónica’s Movistar TV was also interested in purchasing Formula One rights, aiming to reinforce its IPTV platform in 2014. The pay-TV company has acquired the rights to the Roland Garros tennis tournament and is also fighting for Mediapro’s exclusive World Cup channel.
