In a further extension of its strategic move to grow its international content business, ITV has acquired Danish TV production company UNITED.
Founded in 2012 UNITED makes popular factual and entertainment series for Danish broadcasters and has an exciting slate of factual, entertainment and reality shows in its domestic arena, with an increasing emphasis on international formats.
The company is helmed by producers Louise Ellerbæk and Mads Lund. Lund has a background in journalism and is a former Editor at TV2 Denmark, producing more than 100 television programmes for Danish broadcasters TV2, DR, Viasat/TV3, SBS/Kanal 4 and 5. Ellerbæk has worked with TV production and content development since 1993 and has worked as an executive producer for TV2 and SBS/Kanal 4.
Commenting on the move, Paul Buccieri, Managing Director ITV Studios International and President & CEO ITV Studios US Group, said: The acquisition of UNITED further strengthens our production capabilities in the Nordics. The company has a great track record in the region, with two exceptional and experienced leaders at the helm. I am delighted to welcome them to the ITV group and look forward to helping them realise their ambitions both in the Nordics and internationally.
Added Lund and Ellerbæk said: ITV has a fantastic history in entertainment and formatted factual. We are looking forward to collaborating on formats and programmes with our sister ITV companies in the Nordic region.
The acquisition designed to consolidate ITVs strong creative production operation in the Nordics, comes days after the UKs leading independent broadcaster posted what it called its best year-on-year on-screen performance for ten years. For the year ended 31 December 2013, viewing for ITV main channel was up 3% and ITV Family SOV up 4%, driving total external revenues to rise 9% to £2.389 billion EBITA before exceptional items rose by £107 million or 21% to £620 million. As it rebalanced its business lines, non-NAR revenues were up £175 million to £1.211 billion.
