Claro TV increases HD offer, attracts over 100,000 viewers

Chile’s Claro TV has announced that it will increase its HD offer with new channels on its basic package in order to consolidate its customers’ base, which currently stands at over 100,000.
The plan is part of América Móvil’s strategy to improve broadcast quality while betting on video-on-demand (VOD) and streaming contents.
“We aim to consolidate our position as HD leader in Chile, as, currently, over 70% of our cable TV and satellite customers enjoy 14 HD signals without any extra cost,” explained Pablo Astudillo, Claro Chile’s content manager, in the national newspaper El Observatodo.
Claro has increased its basic cable HD portfolio from 11 to 16 channels, while the satellite offer has added six HD channels, taking it from eight to 14 channels. The telco has cancelled low-audience channels and replaced them with HD signals, such as series and movies, themed channels and the successful children’s channel Discovery Kids HD.
“Claro is contributing to HD’s mass use, anticipating a technological one-way trip,” said Astudillo. “It’s like when the TV passed from black and white to colour, and the customers already have the necessary technology to enjoy high definition.”
