CES 2014: Google’s 4K YouTube debut marked with hardware deals

Google has signed up a laundry list of hardware partners to support its royalty-free VP9 compression standard for video, even as it gears up to show YouTube running in 4K at CES 2014.

VP9 is the next evolution of the VP8 video compression standard, which was acquired by Google when it bought On2 Technologies in 2010. VP9 essentially mirrors HEVC compression in that it offers a 50 percent bit-rate improvement over H.264, the current industry standard for IPTV.

VP9, like rival codec HEVC, will allow operators to more efficiently deliver 4K UltraHD video, which takes up eight times the bandwidth of 1080p HD resolution in its raw form. And ARM, Broadcom, Intel, LG, Marvell, MediaTek, Nvidia, Panasonic, Philips, Qualcomm, RealTek, Samsung, Sigma, Sharp, Sony and Toshiba have all decided to partner with the Internet behemoth to make it a commercial reality. Francisco Varela, Google’s global director for platform partnerships, said that the hope is for there to be widespread native support for VP9 inside a range of smart TVs, Blu-ray players and mobile devices over the course of the next two years.

Most of the vendors already support HEVC.

Google said in November that it would be migrating all YouTube content to VP9, which would, eventually, include UltraHD 4K content. At CES, it will debut YouTube 4K content delivery using VP9 for the first time.
