James Cameron’s Avatar has broken audience records in Spain to become the most watched movie on TV since 2000. Mediaset’s Telecinco received a 32% audience share and over six million viewers over the two days the film was broadcast.

These figures have also led to Telecinco beating Antena 3 - which until now had been topping the ranking - in the month’s audience figures.

With the two days of successful prime time programming, Telecinco reached an average audience of 14.4%, nearly one point more than at the beginning of the week.

But the results don’t seem to be enough for Mediaset. The company has announced it will re-broadcast the movie on Cuatro, its other main channel, in order to increase its audience and overtake its competitor laSexta.

Mediaset will now broadcast the film for a new audience segment, scheduling it for the afternoon of Saturday 16 November.

The group’s aims to mprove its current 5.5% monthly audience figure and beat laSexta, which has 6%. As well as the movie, Cuatro will broadcast Spain’s national football team’s match, which usually achieves large audience figures, on Tuesday 19 November.
